Japanese Knotweed - Sap Sucking Psyllid

There has been recent publicity concerning the proposed release of Aphalara itadori, which feeds exclusively (or virtually so) on Japanese knotweed. A considerable amount of research has been undertaken, which may be summarised as: it only feeds on Japanese knotweed and when the population levels are high enough will weaken the knotweed plants and reduce their vigour by sucking the sap. Hopefully this will also reduce the spread of the knotweed into new areas. Additionally the psyllids were not able to successfully reproduce on any other tested species.

How Will Global Warming Affect Us?

If we are to believe that global warming is a reality, then how will it affect us all in the years to come and what can we do about it? Rising sea levels would cause severe flooding which would displace thousands of people and the country's agricultural system would be badly affected. Coastal flooding would affect animals and plants and of course fresh water supplies.

Global Warming - Fact Or Fantasy?

Whilst the warming of the oceans and indeed the earth's surface is well documented, there's equally compelling evidence to suggest that global warming may not be the impending disaster many forecast. The result is division among scientists who study global warming and a bewildered laity left wondering...is global warming fact or fantasy?

Let's Get Local - Do the Products You Buy Travel More Than You Do?

Have you ever considered the origin of any of the products that you buy? When you buy batteries, or gloves, or grapes... do you ever look to see where they were made, grown or distributed? American consumers are accustomed to having access to any product or food item at any time of the year, even if that means oranges from Australia in the middle of winter or craft supplies shipped from China to your front door. Take a moment to realize the amount of energy it takes to ship goods across continents and redistribute them to the stores where you shop. On average...

Global Warming and Its Effect on the Arctic Regions

Polar regions, the Arctic in the northern hemisphere and Antarctica in the southern hemisphere are very definitely showing the effects of global warming. It's thought the Arctic will experience the greatest rate of warming compared to the rest of the world due to the fact that ice has a greater reflectivity than the ocean or land.

Recycling - Can You Be Bothered?

I would like to start by talking about the recycling of DVD and CD cases, discs and paper material as this relates most closely to my industry but I have a further and more important discussion point to make later in the article. With the billions of both CD and DVD cases out there their recycling has now become big business - but most people are still disposing of these materials in their normal bins and not specifically recycling.

True Green Environmental Policy in Trees

A recent statistic I was made aware of state 17% of all greenery including trees has been lost worldwide since 1945. Tress are being replaced by concrete, asphalt, buildings, parking lots, golf courses, and clear cut logging sites in a way that can never be sustainable, who are we kidding? It seems only logical that if we wish to protect the environment then we must do all that can be done to return earthly conditions to their previous state. This is an idea 1st world countries often insist on sharing with 3rd world countries while not actually saying, the 1st world is a prime example of eco devastation which is the actual truth. Every year in so many corners of the earth we constantly read about massive forest fires, floods, drought, tornados and hurricanes. These things must naturally occur but they are all influenced and made more severe by the decreasing population of trees.

Should the US Navy Donate One of Its Old Aircraft Carriers For Pacific Ocean Cleanup?

Did you know we have floating garbage islands in all the oceans of the world? This is human trash which has been washed out to sea, or dumped by ships and it floats around in circles in the ocean. Often, it never reaches the shore because the ocean circulation just goes round, and round. Indeed, this is one of the most disgusting and despicable things the human species has ever done, as they pollute our oceans.

Clarifying the Wastewater Treatment Choices

Originally Published 1994 - (Costs Are Outdated) Companies should consider such factors as space and capital requirement, desired filtrate quality, and level of automation when selecting water and wastewater filters. Filtration is the easiest way to remove solids from water and wastewater streams. In wastewater systems, filtration is used to decrease suspended solids entering the publicly owned treatment works or water-reuse systems or to increase solids in sludge dewatering applications.

Climate Change Factoid - The Carbon Cycle (Number 11 of a Series)

The Carbon Footprint Reduction strategy, currently the only response we have to climate change, cannot possibly work. Why, requires an examination of the Carbon Cycle and that's what this article is all about.

The Environment Trend in Hotels is Changing For the Better

The fact that the environmental trend has changed is no big surprise. What is a surprise is how long it has taken for some industries to catch on. Because of the nature of the hotel industry, waste is almost expected. That mindset is quickly changing and owners now realize that this decision will dramatically affect their bottom line.

New Value in FSC Certified Forests

The global market for forest and timber products is undergoing a radical change driven by two trends. Firstly, there is increasing pressure by customers in European and North American markets for sustainable timber. "Sustainable" is in a large part defined by certification to leading standards such as those issued by the Forest Stewardship Council and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). Second is the realization that forest ecosystems hold far more value than simply the price of timber.

What is Groundwater Pollution?

Groundwater forms that part of the natural water cycle present within the underground strata or aquifers. Of the global quantity of available fresh water, more than 98 percent is groundwater stored in the pores and fractures of rock strata. Ground water is also an important source for industry and agriculture as well as for sustaining rivers experiencing low flows.

Causes of Groundwater Pollution

The risk of groundwater pollution is increasing both from the disposal of water materials and from the widespread use by industry and agriculture of potentially polluting chemicals in the environment. Groundwater pollution can occur either as discrete, point sources (e.g. from landfills), or from the wider, more diffuse use of chemicals, such as the application to and fertilizers and pesticides and the deposition of airborne pollutants in heavily industrialized regions.

Recycle Grocery Bags - Why Should We Re-Use Grocery Bags?

The days of living how we want and shopping for what we want are ever changing. What happened to paper bags and why must we use the plastic, isn't plastic more harmful to the environment? These are questions that many never ask because for most, it does not matter what their groceries are bagged in, just as long as it makes it home without leaking or tearing.

Rapid Plastic Decomposition in Oceans

It is a known fact that plastics in all its forms find their way into oceans. This seriously affects the marine life. Sea animals and birds consume plastics unintentionally, mistaken by their appearance. The studies of Charles Moore, a chemist and oceanographer, published in Environmental Research Journal in 2008 revealed how over 260 species of the oceanic ecosystem faced the hazards of plastic dumped into oceans. One such region between Hawaii and California has been termed as the 'Great Pacific Garbage Patch'. Till recently, disintegration of plastic was considered to be a long process which took several years.

Using Participatory GIS to Forge Links Between Local People's Perspectives and Conservation

This article examines how PGIS supported by selected indigenous perspectives can be combined to support local cultural relationships and institutions and the conservation of Mona Monkeys (Colobus polykomos) in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. The mapping of indigenous lands to manage natural resources, and strengthen cultures is a recent phenomenon, having begun in Canada and Alaska in the 1960s and in other regions during the last decade and a half.

Water As a Symbol of Scarcity

Perhaps, you are aware of the scarcity of water problems in many parts of the world. It used to be when there was a drought it would come every 10 or 15 years on a normal climate cycle. This still happens, however there are more and more people vying for the same amount of water in most of the regions of the world. This is because our population of human beings on the planet keeps increasing.

The Green House Gas That No Global Warming Environmentalist Wishes to Discuss

It may seem amazing that a trace gas like CO2 that has been around for some 5 billion years on Earth, has been deemed the future killer of mankind, and the enemy greenhouse gas that will raise the oceans and flood the lands. Yes, I am talking about Global Warming Theory, where science is being manipulated, and environmentalists are attempting to scare us into preventing pollution.

How to Prepare For a Competitive Shredding Industry

The mobile and off-site document destruction industry has experienced tremendous growth; from its humble North American beginnings in the early 1980's to a globally accepted alternative to in-house shredding. This influx has resulted in a maturing of the market which leaves shredders vulnerable to increased competition, thus, new practices must be established to maintain contracts and prepare for the loss of others. In particular, businesses need to assess and apply applicable changes to equipment, handling efficiencies, perceptions and green policies.

'Hard Actions' For Cutting Carbon Emissions and Saving Money on Energy Bills

Energy usage is a big issue in Australia currently, and in order for the country to meet its carbon reduction targets, i.e the abatement of 138 million tonnes of green gases every year by 2020, energy prices have risen with the hope of spurring the public to be more conscious of the energy it is using. The call for 'hard actions' by Keith Orchison in the Business Spectator comes at a time when a recent survey by a leading Australian comparison website found that 92 percent of those asked were more concerned about the price of energy than they had been a year earlier.

What is Bioremediation?

According to a 2004 study by the EPA, the nation has more than $250 billion worth of clean up to do on 1,238 hazardous waste sites on the National Priorities List plus a myriad of others. The EPA estimates that using traditional methods will take around 30-35 years to fully eliminate the toxins. Such traditional methods include burying oil slicks and other wastes in the ground, burning the pollutants, digging them up and moving them to landfills, as well as just ignoring the problem in hopes that mother nature will "do her thing."

Greenwash Marketing - Avoid the Greenwash

The term Greenwash has been coined to represent the false and disingenuous actions of some companies that present themselves as environmentally friendly when they are anything but. We need to look beyond the publicity to really discover what positive actions lie behind the green spin.

Green Architecture Benchmarking For Social Issues

As broadly defined, sustainability addresses three primary dimensions: environmental, social or human, and economic. The environmental aspects of green building have received most of the focus as the movement has unfolded, perhaps because they are easier to quantify and may include materials or technologies with a visible "wow" factor. Social aspects are harder to define as value propositions within the triple bottom line, and are often thought of as "externalities."
