Evolution's Fatal Flaw - Mother Nature's Report Card

In "Evolution's Fatal Flaw", a carefully researched and well written book, author Lawrence Wood sets out to validate two controversial and often debated claims: that evolution is the proper explanation for our origins; and that evolution is all about the survival of the species, not as one might suppose, about the survival of the individual. It is a monumental undertaking fraught with scientific and philosophical mine fields, all which he traverses with caution and ease.

Interview For "Lessons From the Hawk" Author Mark Kennedy

This book builds on the metaphor of a hawk circling a field in order to set out four main avenues to learning, one of which all learners-- and teachers, and parents-- possess. Since all of us are lifelong learners, this book has implications far beyond the classroom, as well as in all our classrooms. The four approaches offer a more realistic model than those which are a simplistic either/or choice.

Review of How To Read a Book - The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading

Mortimer Adler and Charles Van Doren in their groundbreaking book How To Read A Book: The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading, say people read for: entertainment, information or understanding. The authors also state that, "Enlightenment is achieved only when, in addition to knowing what an author says, you know what he means and why he says it." This suggests that when you read, you have to interact with the words on the page, have to think about what the authors are saying, and why they are saying what they are saying.

Einstein's Telescope - The Hunt For Dark Matter and Dark Energy in the Universe - Book Review

A few years ago scientist thought they were well on the way to understanding the universe. Then they found out that the normal matter that we all know made up only 5 percent of the universe. The rest is 23 percent dark matter and 73 percent dark energy. The only thing dark matter has in common with normal matter is that it behaves the same way with respect to gravity. Einstein's telescope is the bending of light by objects in space which helps scientist study dark matter.

Book Review - Outliers - The Story of Success

Outliers: The Story of Success By Malcolm Gladwell Little, Brown and Company, November 2008. Malcolm Gladwell is the bestselling author of The Tipping Point and Blink. His latest book, Outliers, has been on the best seller list of The New York Times for eight straight months, since it was published in November 2008. Gladwell's engaging and journalistic writing style and his talent for simplifying complex issues, I believe, are his secrets of success. And these are the reasons why his books are both controversial and popular. His latest book is no exception.

What is Silent Spring about? Why was the book so important? Are there lesson we can still learn from this landmark book? Silent Spring shocked us with its graphical descriptions of the damage we were causing to the environment. It laid the foundations of how we should look at our surroundings, describing our intimate connection with nature. She emphasized the fact that what we do to nature we is in essence what we do to ourselves.

Man's Place in the Universe

This articles traces the position assigned to man in the universe, from the central position of importance in the Middle Ages, to the lesser one given by Galileo and Newton and then to the utter insignificance of man in the cosmology of physics leading up to string particle theory, with their possible multiple universes. This continuous trend of ever diminishing importance given to the role of man in the scheme of things was abruptly reversed by the work done in quantum mechanics. In the implications of quantum theory, man emerged as a vital factor in the role of observer, without whom there would be no experimental results. Given these thoroughly conflicting and confusing results from physics since the seventeenth century, what might we today say about man's true standing in the world? Where does he really fit in? A possible solution is suggested.

Reality Check

Einstein, apart from giving the world relativity, was also a founder of quantum theory with his insistence, unrecognized for decades by other physicists, that light had a corpuscular structure, as well as a wave form. Niels Bohr was a leading proponent of the fully developed quantum theory, which had implications which Einstein could not accept and which he spent a lifetime trying to disprove. Einstein insisted that everything in the world, from large objects to small particles, had to be independently real, that is its existence in no way depended on a human presence, or a human observation of the object involved. Quantum theory, which Bohr defended, reached quite other and startling conclusions, which continue to defy common sense today. The core dispute here involves the concept of reality in modern physics and this article provides a very brief overview of the problem, as well as suggesting a solution.

Force in Modern Physics

The article deals with three aspects of the concept force: the mathematical expressions of how it operates, what a force actually is and how it is transmitted. Of these three, the first aspect was thought to be completely answered by Einsteins corrections and refinements of Newton's classical law of gravity. However, the latest results of trajectories by Pioneer and other space craft show that some anomalies are not explained by any present theory.

Consciousness in Modern Physics

Consciousness is no longer a forbidden word in modern physics. The fact that certain implications from quantum theory cannot avoid consciousness has made it newly fashionable. It should thus be helpful to know a bit more about this rather mysterious awareness, especially if it has changed or altered over time. The argument here also reaches into our concepts of reality, another newly respectable subject in relation to physics.

Could Mankind Become Extinct in Less Than 100 Years? A Review of "Uninhabitable a Case For Caution"

The subject of climate change is the topic of many discussions and opinions. It often seems to be an ideological exchange rather than of one rooted in the reality. Many it seems, feel that if outright denial does not carry the debate than either fatalism or wishful thinking, in the form of faith in yet unproven technology, is a much as they are willing to commit to subject.

Life! Single Verse Diverse Origin

Thus Global environmental diversity predates life's Global diversity as there are Global uniformities. One fact that is self evident and beyond question at least for now is the existence the Global uniformity that is instrumental in initiating life and basic constituents of life are same everywhere and nowhere else but on earth. It is asserted in the theory that the trajectory life to tool the form a tree branch because of the environmental variations it encountered along the path of development, but why not be a grass instead of a tree and follow its independent path there off if the cause for it branching off is present from the outset ?

Everyone needs some light reading while on their vacation, but this was NOT my light reading book.
50 Timeless Scientists

It is a book about spirited and tireless men and women, who deprived themselves of sleep or other fundamental essentials of life, and chased their dreams. Some of them were put in the cells on flimsy grounds or cheated out of fruits of intelligence, yet they didn't give up. The comforts that we take for granted today were not the result of a sudden revelation. Read what made these scientists immortal and why we must remember them -even if we can't build monuments in their memories.

Required Skills To Solve Math Problems

I will be talking about an important skill - the Skill to solve problems. I will be discussing Polya's 4 - step process to solve problem. I will be using this problem as a case study: 5x -2 =3 1.	Understand the problem i.e. you should know which quantity you are looking for: The problem above says solve an equation. I know if I have to solve an equation I must look for the value of the unknown. That is, I must find a way of making 'x' to 'stand' alone on one part (Left hand side or LHS) of the equation.

I was hooked and had to read "No Child Left Behind: The True Story of a Teacher's Quest." After 20 years as a Medical Technologist in chemistry and hematology Elizabeth Blake was looking for a change, for a new career. She felt a deep-seated sense of calling to pursue the required education courses of the State Department of Education for a provisional license for teaching.

Electricity & Magnetism - Hands-On Experiments For All Ages

Being without power due to a storm gave us the opportunity to explain electricity to our four-year-old daughter who was quite confused and angry when the lights and TV did not work. So I read Switch On, Switch Off by Melvin Berger, a really great book that describes electricity, how it works, how to create it, and how it travels through our neighborhoods and homes. Reading about electricity and magnetism with my children, I learned a few things about electricity myself.

People in Education - That's What It's All About

In any organization it is people that make the difference and one good example of this is in our educational system. A school district or even a single school needs to work on getting the right team in place, as this is the key to education. This is why it is recommended that administers of education should study human resources and understand what it takes to run a large organization.

Well, this is a subject that should become a national discussion and it is really too bad that politicians talk about it but nothing ever gets changed.

Some Older Artificial Intelligence Books Are Worth Reading

Indeed, as a Renaissance Man, I am interested in all subjects of the human experience, the flows of civilization and the technology past, present and future, but, I am not one to go and recommend that you re-read old science books, when the world in the last few decades has become so technologically advanced, everything has changed. In fact, a PhD in many sectors 10-years ago is almost worthless today. Still, I'd like to recommend an old AI or Artificial Intelligence book from back in the 1980s to you:

The Age and Online High School Education

You might have a better reason to leave the high school before completion of your education. This is a common plight in many young people. If at a young age a lucrative job opportunity strikes your way you would definitely love to go for that leaving all things apart. Even the conventional study is put off and priority is given to the job opportunity.

Paper Clips And Learning Through Reading

Many a book that supposedly teaches the art of leadership simply sticks to just reheating purely theoretical research and social surveys and adding a dab of advice here and there. There's really not a whole lot about how to lead that can be learned from those sorts of documents.

Why Do Birds Sing?

Researchers who study birds know that the quality of the birdsong is a good indicator of fitness. Evolutionary biologist Marlene Zuk, writing in the entertaining "Riddled With Life: Friendly Worms, Ladybug Sex, and the Parasites That Make Us Who We Are," describes how disease and parasites drive the evolution of showy colors, structures and behavior. She and a colleague theorized that female birds use these features to select males who are more parasite-free, and thus species with more parasites should have evolved flashier colors and songs to distinguish the fittest males.

Keyboarding For The Christian School - A Review

I am sure Christians will agree with me that a saturation experience in the Word is a great thing. Leanne Beitel's book extends that principle to the exercises a student copies while learning to type. The book, which is middle- to high-school-level reading, teaches individual keystrokes, home keys and so on in the usual fashion, and then turns to the Psalms for typing practice.
