The Paradox of Creating Money With Free Services - Review

To compete for audience attention, the purveyors of content are increasingly embracing Freeconomics. Anderson notes that in 1961 the cost of a transistor was $10, by 1968 the cost had dropped to $1 dollar and today you can purchase 20 000 transistors for that same 1 dollar. As marginal costs of a copy become so low, the price approaches zero. How can this apparent nonsense work?

Wage Slaves Are Set Free - The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferris Inspires the 9-5 Escape!

Although his ultimate goal is far different than my own, Tim Ferris's approach to life embodies all of the same principles. One of the greatest 'take-aways' I got from reading his book, The 4-Hour Workweek was his observation in describing 'mans need for mini-retirements'. Mr. Ferris proclaims that, sustained and productive focus falters after about 60 days. A long break with completely different stimulus is necessary for mental regeneration.

Summary of a Technique For Producing Ideas by James Webb Young

The ability to produce great ideas one after the other is a coveted skill in both work and life. For years, I have been using the process outlined in the 1926 book, "The Art of Thought" by Graham Wallas to generate great ideas. Recently, I learned about "A Technique for Producing Ideas" by James Webb Young, so I did a quick search on the internet to get additional information.

"Think and Grow Rich" - Enlightened Management Before Its Time

Napoleon Hill, author of "Think and Grow Rich", thought that management and labor would raise their levels because of lessons learned from the causes of the Great Depression. Unfortunately they didn't. However, his insights still hold true and, hopefully, we can start to learn from them now as the same causes have resulted in this latest recession/depression. This article highlights some of Napoleon's enlightened management and leadership insights.

What Would Google Do? - An Audio Book Review

What Would Google Do?, by Jeff Jarvis, talks a lot about Google and what he believes makes it so successful. He draws on these ideas to form several hypotheses about the future rules of business, such as "give the people control and we will use it", "You don't create communities, but you can provide elegant organization", "the mass market is being replaced by masses of niche markets" and a number of other similar "Google Rules". What makes Google so successful? Are there lessons from Google that you can use in your business?

Stall Points - Most Companies Stop Growing, Yours Don't Have to - A Critical Book Review

Stall Points is an essential business book which is functionally valuable to companies of all sizes as well as students of business. Growth stalls are inevitable for most corporations. The length of the stall and the effect of the stall varies from one organization to the next. Strategic solutions are essential but must be used in an adaptive way - continually articulated and stress-tested to prove their current viability instead of being applied broadly and without continuous assessment of the results.

In "Making Change Real - The Heart of Change: Real-Life Stories of How People Change Their Organizations" John Kotter, with the help of co-author Dan Cohen, a partner at Deloitte Consulting, illustrates how his famous eight-step approach to change management has worked in over 100 organizations.
Book Review - Lincoln Speaks to Leaders

This book was written by two authors who each present a different perspective to the work which is sub-titled "20 Powerful Lessons for Today's Leaders from America's 16th President. Gene Griessman has performed in his one-act play "Lincoln Live" since 1990. His contributions to the book consist of words written in the first tense which are presented as though they came directly from Abraham Lincoln himself. The interesting twist is that he combines the history of Lincoln's day with events from modern day.

Inside the Magic Kingdom - A Review

I picked up Inside the Magic Kingdom a few years ago on the promise of learning some of what makes Disney, and specifically Disney World, so successful. The book features a fictitious group of five managers who meet with a consultant named Mort. They meet at Disney World and Mort's agenda is to discuss seven keys that he feels are instrumental to Disney World's success. So as not to spoil it for you, I won't list the seven keys, though some of them I found very closely related to some of the principles of strategic planning in particular and leadership in general.

Robert Kiyosaki - Rich Dad Poor Dad Review

Have you ever heard of a man named Robert Kiyosaki? I happened to come across his best seller Rich Dad Poor Dad about 5 years ago, and let me tell you he has inspired me in a way that I never thought was possible. Statements such as " the poor and middle class work for they're money while the rich have they're money work for them" and "your house is a liability not an asset" have been engraved into my mindset forever.

"The World is Flat" by Thomas L Friedman

"The world is flat" is a metaphor for globalization in the 21st Century, whereby factors such as the internet have changed how intellectual work is being done by leveling the playing field, thus allowing even individuals to compete with big established companies on an equal footing. According to award-winning author Thomas Friedman, with the right imagination, internet connectivity, and capital, anyone can assemble a global company by matching workers and customers from anywhere to do anything for anyone.

The 29% Solution - 52 Weekly Networking Success Strategies by Ivan Misner

I heard a lot of response to last week's suggestion that networking is the most important thing a lawyer can do to grow a practice. A few disagreed with my assessment, but most responded by asking how to network well. Some introverts mentioned their discomfort in walking into a room of strangers. Others said that they'd tried networking but didn't see good results, and they wondered what went wrong. And a few said they worried about being obnoxious or being cornered by pushy or mercenary people.

The Right Leader - Selecting Executives Who Fit - A New Approach to Hiring the Right CEO

Finding a new CEO is a tough challenge. It's tough to find someone who can build on the departing CEO's successes (or straighten out the messes). In fact given the high failure rate of new CEOs (40 percent are gone in under 18 months), traditional hiring systems don't work. In The Right Leader, Nat Stoddard reveals a new leadership selection process that matches the right leader with the right organization.

Transparency - How Leaders Create a Culture of Candor (J-B Warren Bennis Series)

When we speak of transparency and creating a culture of candor, we are really talking about the free flow of information within an organization and between the organization and its many stakeholders, including the public. . . . For information to flow freely within an institution, followers must feel free to speak openly, and leaders must welcome such openness.

"Future Think" - Review of an Intriguing Book on How to Adapt to Change Part Three

Like death and taxes, one thing that never changes is change itself. We live in a constantly changing world, and in order to make the most of these changes we need to learn to understand them and how best to respond to them. The book "Future Think: How to Think Clearly in a Time of Change," by Edie Wiener and Arnold Brown, is an excellent user guide to this process. Part One of this article explored the impact of personal biases on change; Part Two is about how organizational biases impact change; Part III is about freeing our mind to see the big picture once we can begin to get past the personal and organizational biases that influence what we see.
