Alcoholism - An Unfortunate Consequence for Native Americans

Alcoholism has been a common problem among Native Americans since the beginning of the 1700s. Popular belief has this caused by the loss of their native lands and the loss of a portion of their culture to the habitation and growing population movements in the United States among "foreigners" (Europeans) who came to settle the country. It is difficult to pin down one exact reason why alcoholism becomes prevalent in a societal group but read how Handsome Lake strove to rid his people of this devastating demon.

If we take a short tour of her life, we see that after the execution of her Father Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, she was destined to follow her Father's footsteps and take up the responsibility of leading this country as a democratic empire. The Bhutto family has experienced deaths in the most humiliating manner and all of them follow the same way. Like her Father, two brothers and she herself was murdered.

Thus, James Joyce himself seems to be interested in comparing these two together.
Metaphoric Exile of Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom in Ulysses

Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dedalus in Ulysses could be called metaphoric and spiritual exiles, because they are alienated, alone and exiles within their native culture. This is what Edward Said calls metaphoric, rather than physical, exile in the colonial societies of modern times. Bloom has had many religion conversions. Stephen, on the other hand, struggles to invent a new religion of art for his self-made identity.

Dr Johnson and the Free Development of English

In the early 18th Century, both Swift and Defoe proposed that there should be an English Academy to regulate the English language (this was more or less the only time the two men agreed on anything). They felt that English was changing and took this to be synonymous with deterioration.

Homer, Western Civilizations Definition of Culture, Masculinity, and the Silence of Sappho

Classical Studies have long been the standard for creating the cultured mind, to the exclusion of non caucasian histories and art. This ethnocentric regime is now being challenged in the classrooms of various classrooms, as our world is becoming increasingly diverse. But, how has this WASP blueprint effected our sense of our selves, and what is definitively 'refined'. Has this also effected our sex roles in society, and our definitions of the ideal man and ideal woman?

The Golden Touch Of The Egyptians

Around 1500 BC, the effects of the large amounts of gold found in the Nubian Desert changed the world forever. The Egyptians quickly came to covet the brightness and malleability of this precious metal and started using it for trade. In fact their abundance of the ore made Egypt a wealthy nation, and introduced the concept of currency we use today.

The Mystery Of Orpheus

The myths associated with the musician Orpheus are some of the best known of the Greek and Roman myths. But underlying the various versions of the myth are contradictions, or complementary opposites, that make Orpheus the uniter of dualities. He represents life and death, order and ecstasy, abandon and restraint. And at the heart of it all is music, possessing an almost supernatural power, a gift from the gods.

The Biography of Martin Luther King

Martin Luther King was the most important figure when it came to civil rights movement. He worked hard to obtain social changes for African Americans. He, himself, was an African American. He was also a Baptist minister and he was known for being a great public speaker and for encouraging people to attend peaceful campaigns rather than using violence to achieve their rights. He established the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (the SCLC) in 1957 and in 1963 he led a large crowd of people on a protest march to Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. It was where he made his famous "I have a dream" speech. In 1964 he won the Nobel Prize for peace. Four years later, in 1968, he was shot and killed in Memphis, Tennessee, by Earl Ray. The person who has continued his work after his death up to now is Coretta Scott King, his wife. In the US there is a national holiday on January 15 to celebrate his birthday.

It was Dipanker-Srijanan (popularly known as Atisa in Tibet and believed to be an incarnation of bodhisattva Manjusri) who in real sense of the word propagated Buddhism in its true form. Being a disciple of Dharmakirti (who belonged to broad active tradition of Maitreya, Asanga and Vasuvandhu) was naturally not in the favor of Tantrika path as a religious mode of life which was prevailing in Tibet.

Ancient Egyptian culture and civilization began to thrive and flourish on the fertile banks of river Nile beginning from 3150 BC. The civilization of ancient Egypt was famous for several innovations that included controlled irrigation of the Nile Valley, mineral exploitation, early development of literature, an independent system of writing, organization of collective construction and agricultural projects, and development of trade with surrounding regions in east and central Africa. Apart from these, this civilization was also known for its architecture.

A Brave New World Discovered - Touring, Reading, Studying, Discussing And Exploring the USA

I had the opportunity of deepening my understanding of U.S. society, culture, and values through examining contemporary American Literature amongst other scholars from 16 countries from all over the world in 2006. We were a varied group unified by our varying levels of interest in American literature. But then we realized, the diversity of the American landscape as well as mindscape and saw the need for the re-definition of contemporary American literature to include those varying and diversified voices of other communities: Black, Native American, Jewish, Hispanic, Chinese and other Asian minorities that have made that vast land home. This was taken into account in the selection of texts as well as in the seminar sessions themselves. This made the program very rich and interesting. Contemporary American literature in this way bypasses the boundaries of nationality, race, sexuality and gender. The program was versatile and rich in content. So intensive was it that it drew much time and energy from us forcing us to be reading up to late every night to keep pace with the discussions. A widening range of cultural as well as racial and gender diversity were seen in the texts and writers examined and discussed.

Reality - Do We - Or Not Do We - That is the Question

Have you ever had one of those mornings where you groggily get out of bed, make your way to the bathroom and suddenly stub your toe against the bed post? Sir Isaac Newton would certainly understand. In this case, a solid object in motion (toe) + immoveable object (bedpost) = #$*&?!! However, strange as it may sound, at the quantum level of things, Newton's laws simply break down and the idea that the physical world is solid is revealed to be impossible. The bedpost, your toe, the entire bedroom, the entire You for that matter, actually have no solidity. How can this be, when the intense toe pain certainly says otherwise?

Amos Tutuola's Character Presentation Is As Varied As In A Novel

In spite of their simplicity, Tutuola's principal characters are substantial and credible. The Palmwine Drinkard, is clearly established in the reader's mind as a shrewd, witty, easy-going Yoruba. Because of his inordinate appetite for palm wine and his magical powers he looks like a larger than life figure. All along we follow his quest with interest and empathy for his struggling through. But his wife doesn't as much as marginally come off. She makes no impact on the reader.

Yambo Ouologuem's most famous novel BOUND TO VIOLENCE satirically portrays Africa before and during colonial subjugation whilst assessing the role of local overlords who in league with Arab slave dealers, sold their subjects into bondage. After winning the prestigious French literary prize, Prix Renaudot, Yambo received much media attention, widely reviewed, appearing on T.V. shows and interviews, featured in many prominent publications and translations of the novel made into numerous languages. Then it attracted further attention when allegations questioning the originality of the work were made. This article looks at the work as well as the author's life.

World Peace and Religious Peace in the Middle East?

Sometimes, I feel that if all religions disappeared and humans realized that less than 25-30 generations separate their genes, that maybe all the issues might change.
Nazi Invasion of France on the Timeline for World War 2

Every part of the timeline of World War 2 is an integral part of how the war progressed and ultimately ended, but some events are more pivotal than others. The Fall of France, otherwise known as the Battle of France, was the invasion of France and the Low Countries by Nazi Germany and began on 10 May 1940. The battle lasted from May until 22 June 1940 and was a major victory for the Nazis. The Fall of France was executed in two main operations known as Fall Gelb (Case Yellow) and Fall Rot (Case Red). The previous operation involved the Nazis cutting off and surrounding the Allied forces in Belgium and the latter involved the main attack on the larger territory of France.

The Structure of Amos Tutuola's Tales

All of Tutuola's works follow a definite structure. Though they are all heterogeneous and anecdotal in character, the episodes are all tied together, albeit loosely, by their involvement of the hero. The romances start off usually with a situation compelling the hero to embark on a quest. This quest leads him through various ordeals. At the end he returns to his original point, a better man.
