Writing common names like Hall, Thomas or Smith in a genealogy name search engine might result in countless hits, and it can also be very discouraging to try to find out which website will cater to your needs. A unique name might not be a problem for a genealogy name search on a search engine.

It also depends on what kind of record is being search in the name search -- if the information was written by someone else they may spell or have heard the name wrong and it got recorded that way.
