The Top Five Morgan Silver Dollars
By Daniel Goevert

Morgan silver dollars are one of the most significant coin series in the history of American numismatics. The reason is simple: collectors and investors love 'em. How do you identify a Carson City silver dollar among others, including a Morgan dollar? I have some in mint condition but cannot verify their mint origin.

Thanks

Hello, Marianne Grill;

I am a coin collector and can tell you that a person can discern as to if the Carson City mint produced a Morgan Dollar simply by looking at the reverse (tail sides) of the coin. If a Morgan Dollar has the initials "CC" located below the big wreath on the back of the coin, then that dollar was produced at the Carson City mint. Good luck and happy collecting!

You can determine the mintmark of a Morgan dollar by looking on the reverse under the eagle's tail feathers. The possible mintmarks are:

"O": New Orleans "CC": Carson City "S": San Francisco If not mintmark: Philadelphia
