The Ongoing Search For the Lost City of Atlantis

One of the best known myths in history is that of "The Lost City of Atlantis". The Greek philosopher Plato was the first to acknowledge the existence of Atlantis in his dialogues "Timaeus" and "Critias". Plato's accounts have Atlantis lying "beyond the pillars of Hercules" and being a island of great naval power that conquered parts of Africa and Western Europe.

Very good article.. but it omits the most likely location of all. Plato clearly states that Atlantis was a ways beyond Gibralter, facing Gades (Cadiz). Since there is a supervolcanic caldera off Portugal in this very area, most likely this was the real Atlantis site. The island appears to have exploded in the 17th century BC. (See Roots of Cataclysm, Algora Publ. NY 2009)
