Subject: Homeschooling is not for everyone I have been on both sides of the fence when it comes to homeschooling and it comes down in my opinion to whether the parent wants to do it and if the reason they are doing it is for the best benefit to thier child. If your child struggles in school then homeschool may be best. If you child is very social and likes to interact with others regular then maybe not. The fact is though, no body knows all the answers and as long as the childs welfare is put first then the right decision will be made. Comment provided August 17, 2006 at 10:48 am

Subject: Who is it really for? I don't think there is anything wrong with homeschooling as long as it is done in structured environment and the parent who is responsible for teaching the child has the education to do so. If the parent lack social skills and keeps the child home so that they don't have to interact with teachers and scool personnel then who benefits? Keep in mind that social skills are a big part of education. To limit a child to one environment puts the child at a disadvantage with respect to the diversity of public or private school. Think of a white child who has never been around a black child and vice versa, these children will know fear because they know nothing of each others culture. Home schooling, to me, has too many limitations. There are a lot of changes in education, the subjects are more advanced. Yes, it may work for some, but before you embark upon teaching a child at home, weigh the pros and cons. Comment provided November 8, 2006 at 9:50 pm

Subject: Let your child face peer pressure One of my biggest concerns about homeschooling is that my child won't ever be "tested" with the same types of peer pressure that kids going to schools will on a daily basis. These tests are character building and helps the child to make life decisions both good and bad. Now I'm not saying I won't be there to shape and mold my child to help in those decisions, I just mean I want my child to face those "tough" decisions as I think it will make them a bit more capable of handling complex situations. Just my thoughts. Thanks for the well written article. Comment provided October 6, 2009 at 11:12 am

Subject: close, but here's an extra banana
I don't necessarily fit item number two, but I have the good sense to recognize it. School for me was instictive, so I have a hard time explaining things to my kids. Soooo they use online curriculum, outside classes, and tutors to get the job done.
