Good article Peter. You make an excellent point. It's important for people to understand that engine fault codes aren't necessarily going to tell you which part is bad. That's how MANY un-needed parts are purchased everyday. But with the wealth of information that can be looked up on the Internet, many do it yourselfers have good chance of fixing their car & saving some money. After pulling a code, a little research is in order. The Internet is a great place to start!
