The Best Scar Removal Treatment, Which Cream Or Product Should You Use? There are many different types of over the counter scar treatment products available. Subject: Best Scar Treatment This is an great article. I would add a couple of things though. Clinical studies have also shown: 1) Silicone gel is as effective as silicone sheeting for most scars. Gel has the added benefit of being much more user-friendly. Gel allows the continued use of make-up over the gel once it's massaged in. This is important for many women trying to cover up facial scars. Silicone gel also allows the simultaneous application of sunblock - it is very important to protect fresh scars from the sun (for up to 2 years in fact). 2) Vitamin C scar treatments offer another very effective topical option. Vitamin C stimulates healthy collagen production and also lightens dark scars. It is vital to use a product that contains a stable form of vitamin C. Most products contain unstable vitamin C which oxidizes and turns brown on exposure to air. Many cosmetic vitamin C products are actually colored brown to disguise this (choose something that's NOT brown or dark yellow). While oxidized vitamin C is not unsafe, it certainly does nothing for your skin. Dr Chrysopoulo Comment provided November 4, 2009 at 8:16 pm
