Your argument seems good, but there are a few problems with your line of thinking. First of all, it does not follow from your comparison between batting averages and debt averages that the internal differences are the same. Secondly, if we suppose that they are, this means that 3 out of 9 are above average. This means 33,3% of all American households. That is not a small number. Another point of concern is that the average is increasing. This means that as a general rule Americans rely more on expensive loans to get through their every day lives than before. That should make you concerned.
