Speed Reading - The First Steps

Nobody actually knows when speed reading was first used, but it may possibly have been a long time in the past. For centuries, reading was the privilege of a minority of the most well-educated people in the world, the vast preponderance of whom were monks and priests. This tiny, select group of men guarded their privilege and were loathe to coach the general public to read.

There was a little blurb in Freakonomics about kid's reading levels in school. They noticed that there was a directly proportional relationship between the number of books owned and the reading level of students, regardless of whether anyone in the home actually read or not.
