So Your Car Overheats on Hot Days Car problems are funny things. They rarely crop up when you're driving past a mechanic's shop. Instead, they tend to happen at the least opportune time and in the most inopportune location. This is particularly true when you run into problems with your car overheating. Subject: Seldom Thought of Cause
All good tips, but a seldom thought of cause of overheating can be low engine oil level. Low oil can further reduce the engine's ability to fight off overheating. Years ago I personally experienced this with a 1976 Chrysler Cordoba. The car temperature gauge was in the red. After letting it cool and checking the radiator to find it full, I checked the engine oil, it was 2.5 quarts low. Luckily I had some extra oil in the trunk. After topping the oil off I was on my way and had no more overheating.
I've never driven through the dessert but if I did you can bet I would bring extra coolant and engine oil for the car... and a big igloo for me!
