Moving a loved one into a retirement community, assisted living or nursing home can be the most generous, compassionate, and loving thing we can do for our dearest of friends and family. There are certainly times when taking the keys to a car that might very well become a death trap or weapon of destruction (due to diminished eyesight or reaction time) can be the most loving course of action. While such an action might not be well-received, it still loves. In fact, the most selfish thing you might ever say to your child is, “never put me in one of those homes”. Because the request you are in fact making is for that person to give up, quite possibly five to ten years of his or her life to be dedicated in every moment of every day to being responsible for your life.
