Subject: References
All too often a reference check is almost a formality. People believe that you can't really ask more than name rank and serial number. Not true. You are provided a list from the candidate. Call them. We teach hiring managers to call the references and ask one simple question, how did the candidate make things better? If they can't tell you, it is a meaningless reference. If they can tell you then you have a winner.
