Railroad Ties and Tracks I always thought that one section of a railroad track was just like another, but that really is not the case. According to the U. S. Federal Railroad Commission there are 5 classes of railroad track, depending on how many cross ties there are. Class 5 track has the greatest number of crossties, while a class 1 track has the fewest. There is also a difference in the number of crossties within each class of track, depending on whether the track has a curve of over 2 degrees.
