Subject: Mobile TV in India

Mobile TV would fast become a reality in India. It's going to affect the society and the way people receive and react to information. Mobile TV infrastructure and service would enable complementary services like mobile commerce and interactive products delivered to consumers. This would have the same effect that mobile phone made on the way people started using telephones. Mobile phones did not just make people mobile, it changed the way people started interacting and behaving in the society. It made the social structure faster and more efficient. The same analogy can be used with mobile TV. It’ll fasten the way people receive information and react to relevant information. It’ll change shopping practices and voting patterns by proving instant graphic information and an ability to response and react by way of voting, payment and subscribing services.

Mobile TV is not a new phenomenon. consumers in Asia Pacific (Japan and Korea) have been viewing TV on their mobile for more than a decade. It's available across Europe, Africa and USA. The technologies used also varies – from ISDBT to CMMB.

3G is not a ideal carrier for mobile TV service. It's costly, bad quality, limited bandwidth and does not allow users beyond the network's capacity. World over, deployments are broadcast based - some terrestrial and some satellite. Satellite broadcast enables wider coverage, better quality and does not have limitation on the number of users.

In India, 3G TV would be launched by various operators. But the real killer would be mobile TV based on satellite infrastructure - considering the vast geography of India. ISRO and Devas Multimedia is testing satellite based technology and hopefully will launch the service shortly.
