Japanese Hair Straightening
By Danna Schneider

By now, I'm sure you've heard of the hair straightening process invented in Japan that has swept America and made countless women forever grateful to it's hair-transforming powers. It goes by several different names - Japanese Straightening, Thermal Reconditioning, Straight Perm, and Japanese Straight Perm. So, what exactly can you expect after a thermal reconditioning service? Well, it's actually nothing short of miraculous, if you choose the right product and stylist.

hi same here, does anyone know where this salon mentioned in the above story is? I've been reading about the procedure but most places that offer this at professional quality are in places like LA. It'd really be nice to know where this Ohio one is located.

How long is your hair? The longer the hair, I assume the longer the time yes? What do you do, after its straightened. Besides avoid water? Is your hair weaker? I heard about it making your hair very fragile. Is this true?

Hi Danna,

this is a scary and permanent process.

Give me my plug-in hair straighteners any time - at least then, when I wish to have my hair wavy for a special evening I can easily make a change.

I'm impressed by the technology though - and know several people who would love to have this done to save time of straightening their hair every time they wash it!

I believe she's referring to "City Cuts" in Columbus but I may be wrong. I'm searching for someone in Michigan who is qualified to do this but if I don't find anyone I just may be making a trip to Columbus myself.

I just had my hair straightened with the Liscio brand that was talked about in this article and I absolutely love the results! My hair was unruly/kinky/curly and thick. The results are fabulous. My hair is the softest it's ever been and some of my friends have even comments that is feels like rabbit fur...very soft. It's also healthy and strong and shiny. I am definitely going back for a touch up in a few months!!

hey,

I really hate my curly and frizzy hair (its actually more frizzy than curly) but what I really would like to know is: if you get out of the shower, does it dry straight or do you have to flat iron it or something?

Ok...well i think it depends on how curly your hair is to begin with. I have to blow dry it with a brush, but no flat iron is needed. Hope this helps...

The 'City Cuts' in Columbus, Ohio I hear is Extremely good and has over 7,000 customers so they know what their doing. Yes my hair is FRIZZZY and curly and AHH! crazy basically. I havent personally had my hair permently straightened but I have an app. to get it Japanese Straightned and I am very excited --there are before and after pictures, and this will make you completely sure you want to get it done just go to http://www.citycut.us/japanese-hair-straightening-1.htm (and dont be nervous, i mean sure you'll have to get your roots done every once in a while but roots compared to your whole head of hair??) hmm Go For IT! :) goodluck

Just got this procedure done in the DC Metro area- salon Rouge. If you are anywhere near this, check them out! Less costly than expected, and one of the most recognized reconditioning providers on the Atlantic. Friendly people, up front, no games or pressure, thorough and free consultation to consider my hair type several days before the appointment to make sure I was comfortable with this permanent decision. It looks fantastic- better than when I straightened it myself (no frizz to slick down, no missed spots, no eventual flip at the neckline). It moves like feathers, and my boyfriend can't keep his fingers out of it. Can't wait to go swimming and not come out looking like a rat nested on my head. Go for it! The worst that could happen is you have to use a curling iron when the mood strikes you.

Subject: MY DISGUSTING LOCKS

Hi, I have really curly long hair. It's so hard to manage and it's SUCH a pain. whenever I straighten it, I feel like a million bucks so I had my mom ask about a reverse perm. But she asked 3 different hair stylists and they all said DONT DO IT!!! That it would make my hair break off and fry! Then, I heard about the Japanese treatment and how it made your hair STRONGER!. My parents are still concerned. So I was just wandering what the difference was between a normal reverse perm and the Bio Ionic treatment was. Also if it worked on hair types like mine and if the Japeneese treatment would make my hair fall out.

Subject: I HATE MY HAIR!!!

I really really hate my hair. Its curly/wavy/frizzy. More wavy then anything though but the worst part is its ALWAYS sticking out of the wrong places because I have thick hair. I've read about this Japanese treatmeant, and it sounds like it works....my mom thinks it'll ruin my hair. But I can't take it anymore. I straighten my hair, and it usaully comes out good, but since I live in Florida its ALWAYS humid here so after like, 5 mins of being outside, my hair gets wavy/curly and sticks out of the wrong places agian. And I hate it that everyone else has such straight pefect hair and mines a mess. Is it worth it??? And will my hair get damaged?

This sounds extremely too good to be true even the price is reasonable. How long does it stay straight? Is your hair extremely curly and thin like me? I would love it if you got back to me :D

Subject: japanese hair straightner

Live in NYC, and had it done 3 times in Chinatown. Inexpensive at $280/each. I have long, very wavy, curly, frizzy hair and my hair turned pin straight, soft, shiny and silky. Can't wet hair for 72 hours. Also can't use barrettes or hair ties for 30 days as they may cause permanent dent in hair. But your hair dries perfectly straight whether from the shower or pool. Once hair is dry I flat iron briefly for silkier look. Easy to manage. Down side is that you cannot curl your hair at all. My hair grows fast and I had to have it done again within 4 months as new growth was coming in frizzier and kinkier. The process also took 10 hours the first 2 times and 8 the 3rd time. Not doing it anymore as I feel it is damaging my hair in the long run. Last time I had it done was June 2007 and my hair has grown about six inches. Hair is growing but wavy but drier and frizzier. Hope this helps! Good luck.

Subject: Really?

Well you may think after your roots grew out everything was even better but take it from someone with corkscrew really curly hair who got her hair japanese straightened 19 months ago. My hair looks horrible, it's poofy, oddly shaped to look like a rectangle, and it looks like a really bad mullet. Plus the treatment is expensive ranging from $180-600 depending on where you go. I won't lie it looked okay for a few months until it got totally ugly. Sure straight hair is more managable and again I won't lie if I didn't think it was a pure waste of money i'd get it redone but seriously? I look like a hobo.

Yesterday, my wife just had the process done in London's Chinatown at a cost of $600 for about 3-4 hours. This included a light trimming as well. However, we did not do any prior research, so we went in blind, and I about passed out when receiving the bill. The process had 3 major steps. First, seemed to be the chemical straightener. Then followed by two conditioning steps. In between these steps there was shampooing and ironing. I would spend the world on my bride, but I sadly don't think this is a procedure we should indulge in every 6-12 months =(

The stylist who did the treatment was Asian and said he had experience. He seemed like he knew what he was doing. He told my wife not to get it wet for 48 hours. She normally dyes her hair once a month, so she is not going to happy to read the above comments on hair coloring. Our stylist just recommended maybe re-trying non-permanent dye due to it being more gentle. My wife was concerned that the non-permanent doesn't give her good coverage on her gray.

I wish all of you the best with your hair and hope you all hit the lottery to help with the cost.

My hair was super super kink, wooly, and curly. I never wore it down. If I tried to straighten at home it would take 4-6 hrs. It's almost to my waist. I got it done at Bang Salon in Atlanta. Gwen is awesome. She worked on my hair for 8.5 hrs! Afterwards my hair was gorgeous - shiny, pin straight, and silky. I got more compliments on my hair and all I ever did was blow dry (15 minutes) Total cost $700. It was worth it.

In the 5th month it starts looking a bit odd so you have to break out the straightening iron on the roots. Also you may want to get a deep condition b/t touch ups b/c my hair is starting to break off in places.

I didn't believe those before and after pics but now that I have my own...

Its worth it if you hate your curly hair. I've had curly hair my whole life and chemically straightening my hair has also changed my life positively. I feel like I'm a new person. Just go to any Japanese/Korean salon and get it done there.. if not.. then ask around at normal hair salons and ask if they have Japanese hair straightening.
