Subject: Removin Dual OS

Go to the My computer and enable to see the hidden system files, & find the file boot.ini. It will contain entries pertaining to the DUAL BOOT. Delete the path of the OS you no longer require and save. now , delete the OS folder you no longer require or format the drive where the other Os contains. Restart the comp!!

Caution: Do it with care.

Entries would look somethin like multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) and the other OS path normally starts with C:/ or D:/

Subject: Here's how to do it

After you delete the folder that has the OS that you want to delete, right-click My Computer > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings.

You'll see a dialog box called "Default Operating System"

You can edit the startup file with Notepad.

Subject: here is easier way to remove second os

I read what vickie said and it was helpful but an easier way to remove the second os. Use the "run" command on the start menu and run "msconfig". Then click on the "boot.ini" tab. Next click on the button "check all boot drives". It will say that one of them is invalid and ask if you want to remove it. Click yes.

Simple as that.

HANK your the man, your solution worked like a charm. I had this problem for over 6 months, even with Microsoft support I could not get rid of it. again thanks for posting your answer.

Hank was on the right track this is what you need to do to complete it. Click start, click run, type in msconfig. This brings up the system utility click on tab that says boot ini then click on check all boot paths. Do not delete anything yet because on some systems this will only let you boot in safe mode also do not restart till your done.use this only to get info on which o/s to remove (its the one that the sys is asking if you want to delete)save this information. Go to start and click on help and info at the bottom of the page you will find performance and maintenance click on this. On the next screen on the left hand side click on managing your computers performance then on the right hand side click on specify the default o/s for start up.On the next screen click on the little arrow were it says system. This brings you to systems properties under the advance tab click on settings this brings you to start up and recovery your o/s will be in the window.(should be two if there is not why are y here)Next make sure the box next to time to display is checked and no more then 3 seconds is put in. Now click on edit this will bring up any o/s you have running this is were you compare the information given to you by the boot ini (the info you saved) highlight the o/s that matches the info you saved. Click on files and delete it. Exit and return to boot ini now run check all paths yes to delete go to general tab click on normal start click apply and exit restart and your done.

Subject: Can't remove 2nd OS

Hi Hank. I tried your solution but there's a small window popup that says "It appears that all BOOT.INI lines for Microsoft operating systems are OK." I guess this means that both OSs are valid. But I want to remove the 2nd OS as it's using up space on my hard disk. How do I do it?

Thanks.

Subject: Thanks! (And help if you can)

Hank, Blake, thank you both. It worked like a charm.

Question: I have a new system, and installed XP home alright. When I tried XP pro, it gave me the problem (blue screen, shutting down so as not to damage your system, etc).

That is the system you helped me remove. Thing is, the XP pro on my first system works fine!??!

Can I copy it to an external hard drive and then use that to install it on the new system?

Thanks very much

Subject: Edit Boot Configuration.

In order to remove the two boot choice during start up, click on start right click on my computer, click on properties, advance, startup and recovery settings, click on edit, delete the last line, for eg: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT

theres two the same so just delete one of them eg: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT

then click on file at the top and save it. restart your computer and it will work fine.
