Subject: THANK YOU SO MUCH

You have NO IDEA how much this helped me.

I had them infesting my bathroom [because of my clogged sink]

I used this trap for the flies, and used vinegar and baking soda on the sink.

WORKED WONDERS.

I live in a tiny apartment and the fruit flies were really messing things up for me. Thank you.

Subject: IT WORKS!

I was a bit iffy about using a homemade remedy to get rid of fruit flies over professional traps or poisons, but these homemade traps WORKED! :D

Since I didn't have any bananas I used mangos and apples for bait and water bottles cut in half for jars. Within a few hours I had to dump some traps because they were FULL.

Anyone who doubted this like I did, just TRY IT! You’ve got nothing to lose.

This saved me a lot of money and the hassle of going to the store to buy professional products.

Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for the fruit fly trap.

You have NO idea how tired I am of them!!

Last week I put the banana in the jar & covered it in plastic wrap like you said.

After 3 days there were 5 or 6 fruit flies in the jar.

However, not even 5 minutes ago did I pick it up and right there, in front of my own 2 eyes, I watched a fruit fly climb out of the hole, and fly away....

Subject: Fruit fly killing

My sister-in-law and I tried 20 different suggestions. The best 3 we found all involved dish soap (that's what'll do the killing instead of trapping). Along with the dish soap the 3 different things we used were beer (they love it), wine (the love that better!) and some ruby red grapefruit juice. Bananas and beer REALLY attracted them, but it wasn't until we used the dish soap that it killed them. Good luck!

Subject: escaping fruit flies

I also found that using beer as bait is the best way to trap pesky fruit flies. However, I was noticing that some of the smart ones were finding a way to climb back out of the holes! My solution was to insert a thin coctail straw into the plastic wrap, making sure it didn't touch the sides or bottom of the glass (put a bit of scotch tape around the straw so that there are no spaces). This way the flies have to walk through the thin tube, and land on the fruit, but when they try to get out, they automatically end up at the top of the glass where they are blocked by the plastic wrap.

I made 3 traps and the flies went inside, crawled around, and crawled back out. I think they're laughing at me. Help! I'm completely infested!

I am going to try the beer also, but I have also used a little bit of vinegar and a few drops of dish soap in a small bowl and it really does work too. I do not cover it because once they go in - they die! Try this too if you still have a problem.

Subject: Banana was a failure, but packaging great!

I came home one day, picked up a tomato, and they swarmed. In days they were in my whole apartment. I searched online and came across a bunch articles and tried a bunch of methods in different areas.

My most successful was with cider vinegar, but the funnel idea it came with was ugly. I found that by using this method of saran wrap with holes with the vinegar, which has to be cider cause they like the fruity smell, I got great results without the taped paper funnel look that was driving my crazy. Plus, the vinegar was more subtle in smell and I could leave it out longer without being grossed out by my quickly browning banana swarmed with bugs. I also think they are more prone to go through the saran wrap cause some seem hesitant to walk down the funnel. Plus, many of them drown in the vinegar cutting down on how many are buzzing around inside. Then, you can just cover with another layer of saran wrap sans holes and shake to kill the rest and dump the vinegar!

Also, I recommend putting these out (the more the merrier! I used four in my kitchen and it worked wonderfully) BEFORE you clean house, take out the trash, etc... It gives them a place to go.

Good luck!

Subject: Getting Rid of the fruit flies in the banana jar

I tried the banana in a saran-wrap covered jar, and it worked. Now, how to get rid of this jar full of fruit flies - most dead, but what if there were still some live larvae inside? I put the still saran-wrapped jar in the microwave for two minutes (no metal, of course). And voila! All dead. Now my problem is how to get rid of the smell in the microwave oven. (I'm trying two tablespoons of baking soda in a cup of water.)

Subject: It Works!

I would say 90% of the fruit flies in my kitchen are gone using the jar and seran wrap. Some of them were smart enough to get back out but the majority just kept bumping off the plastic and the sides of the jar.

Thanks, I really didn't want to start spraying with chemicals!

Subject: Will try drowning the "buggers"

I too have the issue of once a week garbage, and came back from a 3 day holiday to find my apartment overtaken by these fruit flies, now I'm desparate, and don't want to use pesticides/sprays. I will definitely try the wine, I like the idea of them drowning vs. having to dispose of them outside...wish me luck!

Subject: Fruit Flies Homemade Trap

I think I'll try BOTH the banana in a jar and vinegar and dish soap; we'll see which works best and quickest. Unfortunately I let potaotes rot in my pantry plus we left a canteloupe on the counter and it got moldy and rotted; now the fruit flies are all over the house! Gross!!!

Subject: Homemade Trap for Fruit Flies

After reading all of the comments on this site, I ran to the kitchen to try the dish soap and vinegar approach (these are items I knew I had). I don't have a major problem, but enough of a problem to cause a nuisance and, I caught my first fly in five minutes!! Thanks for the easy, inexpensive method!

I had a glass of wine the other night, and left about 1/4 inch at the bottom. The fruit flies loved it. I only killed about 50 of 'em, but it was satisfying seeing them drown. Will try this idea too hopefully it'll help.

I use bleach they seem to hate it. I wipe down my counter with bleach, and pour some in the drains at night, and spray the garbage with bleach. I keep a spray bottle by my sink and spray several times a day.

Subject: Fruit fly killing

After reading the comments I made 3 traps and set them up side by side with a few inches in between. Within 20 seconds one landed on the vinegar and soap trap.

Vinegar and soap trap - 10 KILLS in 10 minutes

Wine trap - 2 trapped in 10 minutes

Banana trap - none trapped in 10 minutes

Vinegar and soap trap wins hands down. It was fun too. Die you little buggers.
