The statistics you posted are so interesting! I never really thought about how many people read the books, but 15% of the entire population is huge.
I think I had a pretty foolproof method of avoiding spoilers. I went to the midnight release and ran from the store along with my sister, desperately hoping that no one would yell out the ending. Then I shut myself in my room for 12 hours straight, from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m., and read the entire thing in one go. I drank an extra-large English toffee cappuccino and half a two-liter of Vault to keep myself awake. The Vault was only for the last three hours; I wouldn't recommend it for someone sleep-deprived. It makes you twitch oddly after every sip, although it does keep you awake.
I think I was a bit traumatized by the whole experience.. I didn't go to sleep until 6 p.m. despite only having 6 hours of sleep the night before the morning of the release.
I enjoyed the article, and I hope the book wasn't ruined for you by the media! Sorry if I've bored you; I'm excited for the upcoming movie #6 and anything Harry Potter related is making me a bit hyper =)
