Composing for Piano Using Small ABA Form

It's not reassuring to see that a teacher asks their students to start a composition with 'a spirit of adventure' by 'drawing out 8 bars of music on a piece of paper.'

I can see this is a school level course. But even if the course examiner was expecting conventional results all the time this would be still an uninspiring way to set a new composer on their way.

An ABA form is useful as it has a beginning, middle and end...but the proportions/lengths of those sections should surely result from the IDEA...not the other way round!! Eight bars (or two or four) should be FOUND to be right for the idea (not prescribed from the outset) if that's the case.
