Subject: Book Promotion Myth
Judy, everything you mentioned in your article is right on. My book Peripheral View was released in May and while it is in and can be ordered from any brick and mortar book store, I've discovered that unless you are already rich and famous, you get the token 2-3 books on the shelf. And no one is going to walk around to customers and promote your book in the store--having worked at one of the large booksellers, I believe that publishers must cut deals with the bookstore to promote their big name authors, or to get a following for their authors.
I like to to keep in mind that bookstores are not our end-customer, the reader is. Fortunately, readers are everywhere online and you can promote your own book. The trick is to find a focused and intentional way of online promoting. I'm still learning.
