10 Tips For Breaking And Backing A Young Horse
By Rachel Harding

When I started writing my tips for breaking a young horse I thought I must be mad, what did I know? There are loads of experts out there all offering advice and I was just a humble horse owner, not a trainer etc. Then I decided that if my story helps anyone to have the confidence to work with their own horse then I believe they will find it a rewarding experience and it will be beneficial to both the horse or pony and themselves.

Hi thank you so much for your article! I am in the same position as yourself with a young mare, I have built a bond with her and I am following your advice. I have had lots of negative reactions from people about breaking my horse myself through love and trust (I have never broke a horse before!) and it was great to see that a mere mortal is capable. Thank you for the confidence! Hope all is going well with your mare take care and thanks again!

I received all the same advice as in don't do it yourself etc. My horse is a 2 1/2 year old quarter horse, sat on him in the saddle for a couple of weeks but he then became nervous so back to basics for however long it takes. so far 4 months in, good with bit and saddle on, its simply the next stage of mounting. nice to know someone has completed this in such a short time.
