One of the very discussed ideas of Buddhismus and other Teachings is "Emptiness". Many sutras, books, articles and explanations are dedicated to this very difficult question, but every person who wants to know more about Teachings has problems to understand this concept. Here I suggest an example of analysis of the concept "I".
Modern life creates from us a sort of robots. We are so, as the society wants we have to be.
To understand this thesis we can open my Bio as example. There you can read: I'm a teacher. What it means? Do you know species named "teacher" in the nature ? No. But if you observe me attentively, you will never make an error describing me. You will notice: I speak as a teacher, my body assumes postures "as a teacher", looking on my face you will understand without explanations and questions that I'm a teacher. And all this despite the fact I don't work as a teacher for more than 10 years.
Now, if we analyse this image we discover: not only there is not species "teacher" in the nature, but we can't find any material, physiological ecc. parts in the human body that corrispond this name. A worker, an officer, a teacher have 2 hands, 2 eyes, a nose ecc.
The second question I ask myself is: how is it possible I have all this specific peculiarities that can identify me without minimum doubt as a teacher? Where come they from? I saw many teachers when I was a pupil. Children love their parents and teachers and try to copy their behaviour, their voices. Adults say sometimes: you do it as a/your teacher. At the university our professors said us: don't do this or that because your pupils will laugh, you have to be so and so. And finally, when I became a teacher myself, I had to complete this appearance in the way that my puplis and their parents accept me as a teacher (if not, you are not a teacher obviously). As summary of this answer I can say that everything I have "as a teacher" is nothing else as the opinion of other persons, how they imagin a teacher (all "previous" teachers, parents, relatives, professors, pupils and their parents).
Well. So, I'm not a teacher.
Who, what am I? Am I a wife, a sister something other? Analysing every name the society gives me, I find not me, but the opinion of society. Maybe the name my parents gave me? No, my name is only a sound to call me. It can be they gave me this name because they wanted I am as a person they know. And maybe I will try to reach this image. But this is the image of that person, not me. Somebody says: no, the name is something particularly, is only for you ecc. I can answer you: my dogs gave me a name too. They have a special sound to call me and I know it. I was very surprized to understand they gave me a name but it's so. They live 15-20 meters from the house and when they want something from me, they call me with this particular sound and special inflexion that I have not doubts it's for me.
One friend said me, she analysed even the material parts of herself. One part came from her mother. Her mother is not her mother but a part of 2 other persons and they are parts of others ecc ecc. In this way she decided, there is nothing material, physical in her body that she could identify as her, personal.
Finally, what am I?
I'm not one of the names the society gives me. I'm not this body that is a mix of who knows how much human beings and who knows, maybe non-humans too. Pratically my "I" do not exist. I'm an empty form. And this is one of the basic concepts of buddhismus and other disciplines. To follow one of the Teachings we have to understand this essential idea of emptiness of all the forms, including our most hard to renounce name -"I".
To surf without fear in the ocean of schools and techniques I created "Lazy Yogi" where I have place for every conception that can help us on the Path.
