A baptism celebration is a once in a lifetime event, and quite possibly the first big experience of your infant's life. Here are a few suggestions to make the event planning easy.
Typically christenings occur right after the birth, but these days the criteria is far more flexible. Jesus himself wasn't baptized until he was 30, but a lot folks prefer a christening within a young one's first six months. Keep in mind, this is a momentous experience! This is the first of the seven sacraments and should be commemorated as such. Choosing light, lively colors is key to setting the right tone for the party. I'm a big fan of lighter colors; white, light blue, pink, light green. I think all of these colors work well since it sets a nice hopeful tone for the recently baptized. Keep it straightforward. A lot can get lost when being too complex, I'm a big advocate of the purity of the event. By over complicating the true meaning of the ceremony will get lost in the hub bub.
Establishing your baptismal banquet is all about the venue. Ideally, you'll be able to find a space near the event. I've seen baptisms at churches, ponds, rivers, personal property, and so on. If the service is occurring at your congregation, the best bet is to check and see if they offer a party room. If the ceremony is happening during other baptisms the party space can already be scheduled. Look to outdoor parks, in my opinion, it's the superb venue - depending on the weather. Finding a nearby park could be a lifesaver considering the space it gives and the benefits for games and activities. If you're unsure on the head count, this allows flexibility. Be sure to consult with your local Parks and Recreation coordinator to book the proper facilities. Googling parks near your church is a good place to start. If you're reviewing a smaller gathering, backyard barbecues or renting a private room at a restaurant are always options. If there is a restaurant with a special meaning to your family make sure that a rental room is offered. A good rule of thumb is to check at least a month in advance.
This is likely the first party or gathering for your baby. Make sure you involve people important to you and your family, no matter their denomination. Consulting with the Godparents is never a bad idea, but it totally depends on how involved you want them in the process.
It's always best to determine the guest count before securing the venue and meal.
