In the Secrets of Fatima, told to the children of Fatima, Portugal in 1917, Russia was the country singled out as needing consecration, "or they will continue to spread their errors upon the world" (Blessed Mary, 1917).

So why was Russia seemingly singled out? Is any other country any less needy of consecration? The answer is, "No", but there does need a catalyst. Since nations are what is referred to in the prophecies at Fatima, then it is a nation which drives these events to take place.

As is common knowledge, Russia has had a communist background, which is spread, or can be spread, through war. War is another consequence of not consecrating Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Does God, and/or Blessed Mary, need Russia to be consecrated, or to bring about world peace? The answer is again, absolutely not. But it is part of a plan set in motion many, many years ago and told in the Scriptures. God always seems to have chosen one nation or another as players in His plans and purposes, good or bad.

In 1936, Sister Lucy, who was one of the original children who Mary appeared to in 1917, asked the question of why God does not consecrate Russia himself, without the need of the Holy Father (The Pope), and all the other Popes of the world?

His reply was, "Because I want My whole Church to acknowledge that consecration as a triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary so that it may extend its cult later on and put the devotion to this Immaculate Heart beside the devotion to My Sacred Heart ...".

So it is not that God needs Russia for anything, but it is His plan to have the world as witnesses and to bring Christ's and Mary's Immaculate Hearts together as one. This consecration of Russia will be Mary's triumph and the world will recognize it as such. This will serve to bring many people into the Church and save many lost souls from the Hellish fate contained in the first secret of Fatima.

This is also the means by which Russia becomes converted and peace prevails. This is also foretold in the Scriptures. So in this way, it is not just Russia who gets saved, and thus brought back to God's Church, but many countless millions of others around the world as well.
