iPad For Photographers

Expert Author Andy Sowerby

The Apple iPad is the latest must have gadget and personally we have found this to be a very useful tool for photographers as we have been using it to display portraits to clients as to us it feels much more personal then placing a laptop in front of you or giving the hard sell with a large projector screen. With the iPad you can sit with your family holding it in your hands and simply swipe across to the next images as if you were thumbing through a traditional photo album but with the added bonus of being able to freely zoom in on certain areas to make sure you are happy with the shots. Not only have we found this to be an exceptionally easy method to show our portfolio but we have also found that our customers have really enjoyed handling it.

The iPad though is much more than just a photo viewer it is also great for storing photos whilst on the go. With the optional extra camera connection kit you can easily plug in your camera download your pictures when your memory card is full and then carry on shooting. Or if you prefer to work untethered there is an application called "Shutter Snitch". All you need is wifi capability on your camera such as an Eye-Fi card and the pictures you take will automatically be transferred to the iPad's bright crisp 9.7 inch screen. Shutter Snitch will recognise your shutter speed, light levels, focal length, aperture and ISO. You can set up warnings for each of these so that your iPad will automatically tell you if any of them don't match with the predefined rules you have entered. This is a very useful tool to have when on a busy photo shoot as you will know straight away if the pictures have come out from a technical sense the way you intended.

The iPad is also capable of allowing you to do some basic photo editing on the fly. We have found a very clever little application called "Photogene". This lets you do so some of the most useful photo editing tasks whilst you are still on location such as sharpening, adjusting the colours/levels, applying filters, cropping, straightening and even adding things such as frames and text bubbles to create fun photos which can be uploaded straight to Facebook or Twitter.

The iPad has a 9.7 inch screen, weighs around one and a half pounds and comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models. With a battery life that lasts up to 10 hours there is no need to carry around plugs and cables making it a very small and versatile piece of kit to carry around.

Overall we would say that the iPad is a very useful tool for any photographer and whether it's for downloading your pictures onto when you are out on location, for viewing photos together with clients or for making a few adjustments to those great pictures to make them even better. We would definitely recommend an iPad to anyone and will continue to make full use of ours.
