The North American Numbering Plan Association - NANPA - has held the responsibility as coordinating area code relief planning in the United States, as well as forecasting data, in addition to assigning North American numbering plan resources since 1997. NeuStar - which was Lockheed Martin IMS at the time - was selected by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) in order to fulfill NANPA duties after a competitive bidding process.
