- International Women's Day
[News-and-Society:Pure-Opinion] What is amazing is that Women's day came into being a hundred years ago when when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. So this day dates back to the pre-women's-liberation era! So they needed it then, but why do we need this relic from the past today? But when one ntrospects a bit, it is easy to see that a majority of women in the world are not empowered, either socially or economically, or educationally.
- Nursery Rhymes - Are They Really For Children?
[Home-and-Family:Babies-Toddler] It is suggested that rhymes are a kind of oral tradition that originated at a time when not too many people could read or write. Also they originated at a time when free speech was certainly not a luxury enjoyed by the masses. So these little ditties were something that gave people a modicum of freedom to speak their minds, to speak dissentingly of an occurrence; by constructing seemingly nonsensical poems.
- The Art Deco Design Movement
[Reference-and-Education] The Art Deco design style flourished in the 1920s and the 1930s, in the period between the two world wars. This decorative style is seen as an amalgam of many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Bauhaus, Art Nouveau, and Futurism.
- Body Art Around the World
[Arts-and-Entertainment:Tattoos] Body adornment has always included body painting, tattooing, and other kinds of body art, this has been the case over the ages; but in recent times, body art has become more varied and endlessly creative. It now includes variations such as, Face Painting & Body Art, Gestational Painting (or Pregnant Belly Art), and Temporary Tattoos: Glitter, Henna & Body Illustration.
- The Kama Sutra - Not Just a Sex Manual
[Relationships:Sexuality] In the west, the Kama Sutra is viewed as an ancient sex manual only, which it is, but it is much more than that. It is a how-to book about social values, etiquette, duties, economic obligations etc. Understandably the sex manual part of this voluminous work is what has gained maximum popularity. Kama, simply put is sex, but more specifically it means enjoyment using all the five sense of touch, taste, smell, hearing and smell and enjoyment not just for the body but for the mind and spirit as well.
- The Modern Lyricist As Poet
[Arts-and-Entertainment:Music] While there was erudition and sophistication in his verses, there was also ribaldry and a coarseness that was there to appeal to the least sophisticated among his audience. For at the zenith of his popularity, Shakespeare's plays were performed to royalty and the working class alike; both constituted his adoring public, and it is this catholic appeal of his work that made it endure over the ages.
- A Chocolate a Day Keeps the Doctor Away
[Food-and-Drink] Dark chocolate when made in a way that keeps its falvonoids intact, is actually good for health and it is recommended that you eat some everyday! Studies have shown that eating dark chocolate can significantly lower blood pressure. These benefits of dark chocolate, however, accrue from the flavoniods in the dark chocolate. It is these flavoniods that prevent cholesterol from clogging up the arteries, and also reduce the risk of blood clots. These flavoniods are thought to aid the dilation and relaxation of blood vessels.
- The Evolution of Dance
[Arts-and-Entertainment:Performing-Arts] Dance has evolved a long way to its present forms, and is perhaps representative of an atavistic instinct in all of us to express ourselves. Dance of a kind is present even in animals; take for instance mating rituals of birds, such as the peacock who shows off his magnificent plumage to his rather dowdy looking mate and literally prances around in dance, trying to convince her that he is the best bet to father her chicks.
