With the new school year having started, as parents we want to prepare our kids to get back into "learning and growing mode" and to start the new school year on the right foot. But the truth is for tens of thousands, and perhaps even millions of kids the new school year is an extremely stressful time. Last year more than 160,000 children stayed home from school every day because of emotional/physical stress, fear and anxiety and unfortunately that number is expected to be even higher this school year.

I felt compelled to write this after after watching a very intriguing series on A&E called Beyond Scared Straight. I remember a program when I was young simply called Scared Straight and had the same principle. This program brings young people at risk of "falling through the cracks" (10 to 18 years old) into prisons where they are exposed to real life behind bars. I watched it with my twelve year old son and he noticed a common theme among the kids in the program. About 80% said they didn't have their dad in their life.

The race I am referring to is the Race to Nowhere! Earlier this week I had the pleasure of attending a screening of the film Race to Nowhere hosted by The Bixby School in Boulder Colorado. In attendance were parents, teachers and even a few school administrators and it was clear during a discussion period after the film that this was an huge wake-up call for all of us. If you are a parent of a child of any age, watching this documentary film will do your child a great service. In fact, it may just change their life.
