  • This is Why You Do Triathlons!
[Recreation-and-Sports:Triathlon] Triathlon is the fastest growing sport in cycling. The more triathlon events I attend, the more I see why. Today's article is about Donna Chapman, a runner and a triathlete. It is about performing in the real world. Everything is easy in life when things go well. When things don't, however, we see a differentiation of success, failure, winning, losing and exhilaration or exasperation.

  • When is the Best Time to Get a New Triathlon Bike?
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] Many triathletes are perplexed regarding the timing of purchasing a new triathlon bike and the fitting that preceded it. This is a very good question and of course the answer is, "When you think the time is right," which does not really help most people. What does help, however, is the knowledge of what is happening to you before, during and after the racing season.

  • Delimiting the Limits
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] I was riding in the Hill Country recently and on a pretty hard section of the course I looked over and observed a 66 year young rider who was hanging tough with the rest of us. It reminded me why my job is not merely designing and creating bicycles, but also helping people expand their limits.

  • In Depth - Road Bikes Vs Triathlon Bikes
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] I am constantly asked what the big differences are between road bikes and triathlon bikes. The obvious difference is the fact that one races a triathlon in an aero position, but sometimes we see aerobars on road bikes so what is the real difference? There is a smaller difference between UCI legal time trial bikes and triathlon bikes, though they look very similar. The short answer is, road bikes are designed to have three hand positions, triathlon bikes are designed to have one.

  • How Do You Know if a Bike Fit is Right?
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] This is the second question I usually get, the first one being, "I don't need a bike fit or a new bike, because I fit my bike just fine." The question of whether a bike fits or not has been asked for decades and at the end of the day, the answer does not lie completely in the field of "art" or "science." For me, I feel that there is both a science to determining what is right for a person and an art to working with the person to get the desired results. So the answer to the question is, "You don't know if a bike fit is right unless you find a better way to determine what "right" is."

  • Why Do Bike Fits Vary From Shop to Shop?
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] The hottest topic in bicycle retail is bike fit. Every shop recognizes the need to properly size a bicycle to the customer. It seems that almost every shop now has an expert "fitter" and they advertise perfection to all their clients.

  • You Don't Have to Be a Bike Racer to Ride With Them
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] A friend has been hounding me to participate in a morning ride and I always had an excuse to bail. This week, however, I decided to give it a try as I knew the group would be small and as such the potential for a super ride experience was very high.

  • Custom Bike Fitting Process - How and Why
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] Many people ask us about our fitting protocols. This explains what we do-how to fit a bicycle-so one can have a better idea of the depth we go to in order to find an exact position for a rider.

  • From Sao Paulo to San Antonio - A Fitting Experience
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] As my bike fitting studio develops the Global Bicycle Studio concept, more and more people will travel great distances to experience bicycle design at a world class level. This story is about our friend Paulo Pontes who contacted me after seeing pictures of our custom fit bicycles on Flickr.com.

  • How Many Bikes Do I Need?
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] How many bikes do I need to get to the next level in cycling? When we look at the pros who could get whatever they want, we find that they use a small number of bikes with different roles.

  • Triathlons Are For Champions
[Recreation-and-Sports:Triathlon] Triathlon is the fastest growing sport in cycling. In fact, the triathlon sport grew 15% last year when the bike business as a whole did not. I think there are some good reasons for this. I started out cycling for transportation, wound up racing, and now ride fast for fun.

  • Leading the Recovery
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] I originally wanted to entitle this article, "I choose not to participate in the recession" after reading a cool article by Doug Fleener, a retail consultant that I follow on the Internet. His article suggested the change from negative to positive and I ran with it. Here is the premise. I think that if cycling can be the Fountain of Youth, why can't it be a fundamental part of getting "back in the game" to work one's self out of this global mess, one person at a time?

  • Fixed Gear Fever
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] The New York City bicycle messengers have ridden fixed gear bicycles for years. The ultimate bike for them was a track bike; single speed "fixed" gear, no brakes. This minimalist bicycle has now gained resurgence among colleges and urban centers.

  • Triathlon Training and Fitness - When in Rome
[Recreation-and-Sports:Triathlon] Triathlon is one of the best things that has happened to bicycling. Many people who were runners and swimmers, or just people wanting to challenge themselves in a race against the clock, have taken up the Swim, Bike, Run phenomenon. I think it is super as it brings a different type of person into cycling. There is much to learn, however, and I have always been adding to my "triathlon bank" of information.

  • Bicycle Frame Geometry 101
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] I was discussing frame geometry with a prominent coach last week and his perspective on frame geometry struck a nerve with me so I wanted to share this topic with you. I had been riding "stock" frame geometry for decades and the possibilities created by the combination of an unlimited fitting system and true custom geometry did not exist for me, and thus for you, until fairly recently. The time honored principles of Knee Over Pedal Spindle, (KOPS), the Lemond method, standover height, saddle height equal to hip height when standing next to the bike and ...

  • Starting Over - Riding a Bike
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] My experience with cycling is, "I've been fit and I've been fat, and fit is better!" For better or for worse, I have had to start over riding a bicycle quite a few times. Riding a bike when fit is easy. You can go anywhere you want, everything works well, the handling skills are honed and you can take for granted how much effort it takes to be a human-powered vehicle. This is not the case when learning to ride a bike as an adult and certainly not when starting to ride after a long layoff.

  • Claim Your Lane! Part III
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] The next logical question is "What can I do to navigate better on my bike?" The first thing to think about is what I call "Taking the Long View." This applies to riding alone, in a group, on a straight road or in a curve.

  • Claim Your Lane! Part II
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] We share the road with bigger, faster vehicles driven by people who may or may not pay attention. I ask people what their biggest fear is while riding on the road and by far the answer is "being struck from behind." It is a harsh reality that when we are struck from behind we are powerless and "naked."

  • Claim Your Lane! Part I
[Recreation-and-Sports:Cycling] I am constantly asked why I ride on the road. We have a huge network of roads and precious few trails and bike lanes. The obvious solution to me is to figure out the best way to use what we have, because I want to ride now, not wait until the government gives us another infrastructure.
