  • Diabetes - False Test Results
[Health-and-Fitness:Diabetes] I recently got the results of my latest diabetes panel and within moments of checking the results on line I received a phone call from my primary physicians office. It seemed my LDL cholesterol had gone up significantly and I might add unusually so, up 75 points. I returned the call and a nurse got on the phone and explained to me I needed to pick up a prescription for 80 mg of simvastatin immediately. I assured the nurse that if she were to look at the full blood lipid panel results as well as my A1C (average three month blood sugar level) it appeared the test was in error and we simply needed to run another test. She retorted back the test could not be wrong and I was in danger of having a heart attack!

  • Diabetes and Hypoglycemia - The Danger of Low Blood Sugars
[Health-and-Fitness:Diabetes] The dangers associated with high blood sugars in those with diabetes or pre-diabetes are highly publicized: heart disease, neuropathy, nephropathy and retinopathy among them.  Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar and its effects are far less publicized and understood but to the diabetic using insulin this condition poses a grave threat.  Hypoglycemia is responsible for about 5 percent of deaths in insulin dependant diabetics.

  • Yoga For Diabetes - Diabetic Neuropathy
[Health-and-Fitness:Diabetes] Diabetic neuropathy or nerve damage affects 60 to 70 percent of people with diabetes. The highest rates of neuropathy are found in those that have had diabetes for a long period of time and in those with poor glucose control. The practices of yoga offer a synergy of techniques to address the root causes of diabetic neuropathy.

  • Yoga For Diabetes - Insulin - The Fat Hormone
[Health-and-Fitness:Diabetes] Insulin is a powerful hormone produced by the beta cells in the pancreas. Its primary function is to assist the movement of glucose in the bloodstream into the cells of the body to provide energy. Often overlooked is the fact that insulin also directs fat cells to convert glucose and fatty acids in the blood into fat for storage. So insulin, or the "fat hormone," must be reduced in the body of the diabetic.
