I am an author, columnist, freelance writer, self-esteem and relationship coach, consultant, and board chair of Self Esteem Boston Educational Institute, Inc. My award-winning book Boot Camp for the Broken-Hearted: How to Survive (and Be Happy) in the Jungle of Love (New Horizon Press Books, Dec. 2007) is about women, self-esteem and relationships and shares valuable field-tested advice in a humorous and informative way. And, best of all, you don't have to be among ... [More]

  • We See Therefore We Assume
[Self-Improvement:Inspirational] Over the last several decades, we have witnessed many kinds of demonstrations, marches, sit-ins, and rallies representing group dissent of issues like infringement on civil rights, warmongering, and discrimination. Recently, however, there was a different kind of insurrection - a smack-down of stereotyping and a battle won for self-esteem. It was the night Susan Boyle graced the stage of Britain's Got Talent!

  • Are You Afraid of Success?
[Self-Improvement:Achievement] It seemed appropriate for me at this moment in time to write about what it means to achieve success in life because a few of the goals I set for myself both personally and professionally are about to come to fruition. Although the waiting and worrying will finally be over, I find myself having mixed feelings about my accomplishments. It seems as though I am afraid to succeed almost as much as I am not to succeed.

  • Be Yourself - What Does That Mean?
[Self-Improvement:Empowerment] So often when asking advice on how to make it through a difficult situation, we are told "Just be yourself." Well, if you're heading to a job interview or going on a first date, such a general comment might not be much help. So how then do we figure out who that is?

  • Should Kids Know the Truth About Money?
[Home-and-Family:Parenting] As a child, I was kept in the dark about money until my late teens, if you can believe that! I had no idea what my parents earned and just knew that if I asked for $20 to buy something, I could probably have it. The day I came face to face with my delusions about life and learned "where money comes from" was the day after my mother passed away.

  • Answering the Call to Service
[News-and-Society:Pure-Opinion] The idea of volunteerism in this country has been simmering on the back burner for years now with whispers of it being uttered by a few of our leaders every so often, until now. The call by our new president for our citizens to possess "a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves" is the only trophy we should need.

  • A Heart in Love - The Great Equalizer
[Relationships:Love] Whether you're a woman or a man, there will be a person, at some point, who will have the power to bring you to your knees, begging for more sweet torture... you know it's true. Someone who will cause you to feel the deepest joy and the most horrific pain imaginable.

  • Juno - A Different Version For Teens in Gloucester, MA
[Arts-and-Entertainment:Movies-TV] Is it just me or did watching the movie "Juno" worry any other responsible adult? I mean, the critics raved about it. The Los Angeles Times said, "'Juno' is hilarious and sweet-tempered, perceptive and surprisingly grounded.

  • Taking the Bully by the Horns
[Home-and-Family:Parenting] In July, 2006 the Malden Observer printed an article I wrote called "Tireless Voices Can Defeat Bullies" which was my attempt to get kids and adults alike to get involved and help the victims of bullying; to talk to young people and find out what's going on in and out of school, to report any violent or degrading behavior and to hold the offenders accountable. Well, here it is almost two years later, and I have to say, although reports of bullying seem to have risen, I think that what has occurred is that curiosity about the outrageousness of these acts has finally made it into the daily media (thanks to television and the internet).

  • Quiet Grace on a Crowded Train
[Self-Improvement:Inspirational] Did you ever think you'd see something beautiful on a crowded city train? I did.

  • The Times of Our Lives
[Self-Improvement:Motivation] As I turned my gaze away from that lost family and toward my fiance, I could feel how precious time had suddenly become, and I whispered "thank you" to God for giving me some more of it with him. For a moment I found myself regretting that we had no pictures from this vacation together, but then realized that whether or not we actually capture our experiences on film, our minds are busy recording images of certain moments throughout our lives - moments that somehow jolt our emotions, have an impact on us, and change our perception and direction. I wondered if that kind of memorialization was only triggered during traumatic events.

  • How Do You Define a Successful Relationship?
[Relationships] In my coaching sessions with clients, I realized that the way many people define a "successful" relationship is limited to only those that result in marriage. Well, I am here to tell you that is not necessarily the case.

  • The Responsibility of Free Speech
[News-and-Society:Politics] It seems as though every other day we hear that some celebrity or news personality said something inappropriate or hurtful about another person or group of people. In the aftermath, some of these insolent talking heads choose to hide behind drug abuse or alcoholism, or some mental defect. Others apologize and take their medicine along with a good chastising by the media and late night talk show hosts. But what is it that the public is really upset about, and what do they want in terms of reparation?

  • Much Ado About Love
[Relationships:Love] Valentine's Day... a holiday concocted by big business to guilt people into spending money? Maybe - but women talk. They compare stories. They prepare your meals, for heaven’s sake, so please, for your own health and mental well-being, if you follow one piece of advice in this column, let it be this: Don’t forget to buy her a card!

  • Are Our Young Women In Trouble?
[Womens-Interests] Have you noticed how obsessed most young women appear to be with having the best body, face, and hairstyle? Why is physical “perfection” such a priority today? Could it be the dozens of makeover and plastic surgery shows on television or the constant marketing of products consuming the airwaves and billboards, luring our young women with false promises of happiness and everlasting love, and almost hypnotizing them into buying their magical potions and gadgets -- look like your favorite movie star, and have a wonderful life!
