  • The World is Flattened But is the World Flat?
[News-and-Society] The appalling tragedy that has hit Haiti has not found reverberation here in India. The media coverage is pathetic. Most of the print and electronic media is pushing it in as an afterthought. The national cricket final is the most important news on earth. For God's sake!

  • The New Learning Environment
[Reference-and-Education] Today, learners are proliferating, but the instructor population is struggling to match learner growth rates. Learners are in every city, town and village. And, all yearn for quality education. But the quality education givers are few and far between. So how do education planners and implementers reconcile with this mismatch? Distance learning was thought to be the answer. Indeed, it still is. But there is a difference today in the deliverance because of technology and Internet. The quality gap between face-to-face learning has been bridged as has the distance gap been virtually bridged.

  • A Single Time Zone For the Entire World
[Reference-and-Education] I have often wondered why we can't have a single time zone for the entire world. We can then all follow the same 24 hour clock. Think of all the benefits it would accrue.

  • Who Will Inherit Your Blog?
[Internet-and-Businesses-Online:Blogging] "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes", said Franklin. The exception list keeps growing. We had Mitchell adding childbirth to the list in Gone with the Wind. And I, humbly want to add blogs (or tweets, if you will), to this list.

  • Romancing the Letters 2
[Writing-and-Speaking:Writing] In my earlier article about letters I was a little wistful. I exhorted people to send real letters across to friends. I now realize, I was far removed from reality.

  • Q Rage
[Self-Improvement:Anger-Management] Akin to what we see on the roads today, is another type of rage. Let us call it 'Q Rage'. I have to admit that I succumb to this rage very often. Whether I am at the BSNL counter trying to pay my telephone dues or at the movie theatre trying to get the first show tickets or at the temple trying to get His blessings, I often feel the rush of blood to my head.

  • Romancing the Letters
[Relationships] Some of you may remember a scene from the Bollywood movie 'Border'. A satchel-full of letters arrives at a remote border outpost and all hell breaks loose. There is a mad scramble for the letters. What joy on the faces of those who receive a letter! It's like getting a little bit of one's home there in the frontline.

  • Do We Need the Spelling Bee Contest?
[Reference-and-Education] The Spelling Bee contest in the US has just concluded. As in each year, there was a huge media attention on this yearly contest. However, can we step back and do a rain check? What is this all about? Is it one more American Idol type of contest that is more idolatry in content than intellectual? We know that Spelling Bee predates American Idol by many, many years and any comparison will be misplaced. But here is how I look at it: if it is idolatry in content, I am fine with it but if it masquerades as an intellectual pursuit or a grand scheme to improve the spellings worldwide then I have an issue with it.

  • We Need to Make Spellings Easier - A Case For Dropping Silent Letters
[Reference-and-Education] We know about silent letters in the English language. Silent letters have been there in certain words for centuries and if we do not act quickly will continue to remain likewise. Why are they there? I do think that the silent letters are there because no one bothered to take them off!
