eBooks - Should You Release New Editions of Successful eBooks?

Expert Author Glen Ford

After you've been in business one question seems to come up that most people don't think of when they are first starting up. A question that has a specific effect on the number of sales and the practical life of your eBook.

Should you release new editions of successful eBooks?

The argument against it has to do with making people who buy the previous edition feel as though they have been cheated. After all, they have paid good money to buy a product which is obsolete. So you will automatically get a number of refund requests as soon as you release the new version.

However, despite this argument, the overwhelming answer is "YES, you should."

You see, if you use a proper product launch you can not only reduce the returns but also increase the price and value of the product in your customer's eyes. And sometimes even re-sell the product to your previous customers.

The key is to stop sales as soon as a new edition is identified. Don't remove the sales pages... they will help to build up a demand for your new product. Instead just put a "No Longer Available -- New Edition Coming Soon" flag on the existing pages. And of course, remove the ability to order the book. In fact, you can even allow people to pre-order the new version and receive the old version while they are waiting!

One thing you don't want to do is release new information on an as it's learned basis. That will just confuse your customers. Instead you need to hold the changes and then release all the changes at the same time.

This has the advantage of helping your courses to always sing the same tune. You see as you develop courses you will learn new things. You'll identify new ways to look at the solution. You'll spot things you've missed. Over the whole development you'll change your opinion and have a different solution.

Each edition of your eBook becomes an excuse to revise all your courses to incorporate the latest information. And of course, revised editions are usually easier to create than the original version.

And of course, there is one final advantage. The quality of your product -- your eBook -- goes up. Your customers will recognize that you are improving your eBook. And that the eBook is not becoming stale and old news. By revising your eBook on a regular basis and incorporating new and improved information, you will give it a new life and extend the number of sales you can make at full price.
