  4. The Criminal Law Handbook - Know Your Rights, Survive the System by Alain Burrese

"The Criminal Law Handbook: Know Your Rights, Survive the System" by Attorneys Paul Bergman & Sara J. Berman is an impressive 678 page tome of information all about criminal law. The book sets out to assist you with understanding the confusing rules and procedures involved with criminal offences and to teach you how the system works, why police, lawyers, and judges do what they do, and most importantly, what you can do to limit the harm. I feel it accomplishes that goal very well. Most of the book is written in an understandable question-and-answer format...

"Legal Research: How to Find & Understand the Law" by Attorney Stephen Elias and the Editors of Nolo is another book in the huge legal library published by Nolo, a publisher that prides itself on making the law accessible to everyone. I'm an attorney, and I still like the books put out by Nolo, especially the ones on areas I'm not as familiar with, but want a little knowledge. Nolo always delivers.

  6. How Cyber Law by Brett Trout is an Example of POD Publishing by Michael Strozier

As the publishing industry undergoes violent upheavals of change, it is useful to track that change through the very books that are riding that change, and implementing it, through how they are created, published, distributed and sold. There are many books on investing that include chapters on IRAs, 401(k)s, and other retirement plans. However these books usually give the advice to ensure you are contributing to these plans and offer suggestions on what investment vehicles to use to help save a nest egg for a person's retirement years. This book is different. "IRAs, 401(k)s & Other Retirement Plans: Taking Your Money Out 9th Edition" by Twila Slesnick and John C. 19. Intellectual Property Law in the Information Age - Book Review by Lance Winslow

When it comes to Intellectual Property law in the computer age, there are far too many patent infringement cases, and far too much legal maneuvering, which gets in the way of the speed of innovation in the industry. Probably the best book that I've ever read on this subject is the one about how Microsoft changed its strategy and just said; the hell with it, and went all in!

  27. Legal Business Development - A Step by Step Guide, By Jim Hassett, PhD by Julie A. Fleming

I must admit that I'm always a little skeptical about non-lawyers who purport to teach rainmaking or practice development skills. Nothing against non-lawyers, obviously, but I've seen too many suggestions that might work beautifully in another field but wouldn't fit at all in law. And so I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up Legal Business Development. However, it turned out to be one of the best client development books I've ever read.

The book is a quick 188-page read, full of exercises to help clarify the practice and the clients that will allow you to create a satisfying practice. It then continues with suggestions on how to create that practice once you've identified it, how to attract the clients who will appreciate your efforts, and how to engage in a happy practice. The bottom line is not terribly surprising, though I like the way it's presented: to be a happy lawyer, figure out what you like about practice and then find ways to get more of that.
