Remember those essay tests in high school or college? There was always the all too blank sheet of paper and worries of where to begin and what to write. Blogging may start off with the same anxiety-you've got that "Hello, World" sample first post that you have to delete and you're itching to get something on the Blog that will be relevant to your business. Ready to start, you will be surprised to discover that you not only have your first blog post inside you, but your first three!
Modern bloggers can take a tip from the old Greeks: Aristotle said the perfect plot should have a beginning, middle, and an end. So, start your blog at the beginning. A perfect kick-off post can announce the new blog and if your blog is part of a new web site or a redesign tell your readers about the changes.
Blogging is not a race to spill everything you know or want to say in one post. When people write, they tend to use the essay techniques they learned in school-they elaborate to stretch posts to 500 words. Because you don't have a 500 word target in blogging, you can write shorter posts which are ideal for your business news and announcements. Here's an idea for your second post - acknowledge or promote a vendor's or a client's news and events. This is how the viral marketing begins, spreading the word for others as they spread the word for you.
Do you have a writing stockpile hanging around? If you've written a brochure, had a company newsletter, or used press releases to promote your business, then you have a writing stockpile which can inspire your next blog post and numerous posts to come! Even if your older writing is out-dated, a little editing can whip it into shape.
So there you go - the material for your first three posts is already available. The news and events are happening and you have writing that can be turned into posts. Don't put if off any longer - get blogging.
