Your First Affiliate Home Business Question - What Should I Focus On?

Expert Author Elena Rogers

Did you know that one of the biggest mistakes when you are starting an affiliate home business is usually distraction? You are all fired up that this could be a possibility and you are rearing to go. It certainly is true that it is a possibility, but you must resist trying to check out all the information overload and especially the schemes that promise the Moon.

If you are like me, at the start, my email was chock-full of enticing programs that would, so they told me, reduce the hard work to nil. Each one had a captivating title, that I was tempted just to read. The problem is, I didn't only read. I also bought and my internet venture which was supposed to bring me in dollars was costing me dollars, until I realized my mistake and stopped!

I learned to impose self-discipline on my morning reading of the e-mails. I would do the work first and then check out the glittering stuff after. In time, I learned not to look at many at all. I followed a few serious basic-plan low cost information programs, as well as searching for much free information on content blogs and forums.

It is also important to promote a product that you know something about and like. If you are a teetotaller you probably wouldn't do well at promoting Malt Whiskey. You would not be convincing! Look for a product that interests you so that you can write some original articles about it. People love personal tips. If you are passionate about walking in Scotland and walk the Highlands in your weekends, you would be the perfect person to promote books ( you might even consider writing your own simple e-book on the " Nooks of Crannies of the Loch Country.) You might add special walking shoes and later mountain rucksacks.

That brings me to my next point. In my opinion, you should not attempt to promote too many merchants. Find one or two good items and promote those first. Usually, for a while, you will be going through a process of trial and error. You will be noticing what works and what doesn't. You must then, eliminate what is'nt working and incorporate what is!

The most important thing however, in the end,is to understand keywords. You must take the time to learn a few of the basics. Your keyword, for example, should not be too broad, The keyword "travel" would give you too much competition. You can make a quick check on a keyword by typing in the word in inverted commas, (we used to call them "talking marks" at school) and then checking on the search results at the bottom. This will give you an indication of the numbers of people searching for those results.

As you will be working (maybe for a couple of hours) consistently at first. You should find a theme that will be fun and enjoyable for you. Very often, the best choice is your hobby which can be anything from fishing to flying. Think of all the products which could be promoted in those two niches alone, and the more you tailor your niche the better.
