When I started my business 5 years ago, I had an all consuming passion. I thought about starting the business every hour of every day. I dreamt about it at night and I plotted my course during the day. All of my energy was directed towards this goal.
Passion is more than just a want or a wish, it is a deep emotional desire that guides you in the face of all obstacles. Building a business requires an unrelenting passion. The single most important thing you must do is uncover your true passion and become emotionally attached to it. Most people have a passion that is hidden deep within their subconscious which has been buried by years of self-doubt and fear. Here are two exercises for getting past this fear and self-doubt:
• Think about what you would do if you could not fail. Allow yourself to consider this without any limits. What would you do? Take the time to write out your thoughts. Writing helps to solidify this picture in your mind and attaches emotion to the idea.
• Think about the kind of life you want to live. Do you want a life free from the 9-5? Do you want to spend more time traveling? Where would you go? What would you do? Write out your thoughts.
Completing these exercises will tap into your subconscious mind where this desire is hiding dormant and trapped. Repeat the writing excises once a day for 10 days. The more you work on digging deep to discover what you truly desire, the stronger your passion will become.
It is human nature to want to stay in our comfort zone. Thinking about your deepest desires is scary and the fear of failure will try to prevent you from getting emotionally attached to the idea. Ignore the fear and consider the possibility for now. If you can open yourself up to the possibility, you will see amazing opportunities that previously went unnoticed.
