You Must Straddle Categories and Cross Pollinate to Innovate

Expert Author Lance Winslow

If you truly want to innovate, invent, or to keep your creative juices flowing then you need to consider cross pollination. You need to consider how important it is to straddle categories, and borrow from one industry to use in another. Many innovators and designers borrow from nature when designing products, cars, or tools.

Studying nature and using tips and techniques in personal tech devices has paid dividends to many a research and development company. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been made from products that borrowed from nature.

You do not have to be a super creative genius to stay in the creative flow, or to come up with endless ideas, and new concepts every step along the way. You can do this merely by dividing your attention amongst many different categories and subject matters, looking at each topic, and trying to understand why things are, the way they are, and then thinking of how this information affects other fields, and industry subsectors which you might be involved with.

One thing I often recommend to innovators is to get away from what you are doing, and pick up a book on a subject you know nothing about. Start reading, looking at all the pictures and diagrams, and try to get interested in it; as you flip through each page, and read the text, stop and think about how these things can be transferred or how they might affect other things that you are working on.

Indeed, this strategy works extremely well and is probably one of the best ways to cross pollinate; you need to straddle the categories. Please consider all this.
