You Have Less Than a Minute to Grab Their Attention

Expert Author Joe Dockter

What is the 'right' content? What is the 'right' way? When it comes to a business Web site you have less than a minute to present the 'right' content in the 'right' way. You want your customers to explore your Web site and return time after time. Your content needs to help the customer absorb the information as quickly as possible, tell them who you are and what you have to offer. The information must be in an informal friendly tone and be clear and concise. Your information also needs to develop a one-to-one relationship with your customer and invite interaction.

Identifying your target audience should be the first thing you do when deciding on the content for your Web site. Your Web site needs to speak directly to the customer. You should include action points - links to click on, forms to fill out or descriptions of the products and services you are offering. Remember to keep it simple sir/sister (KISS). Customer browse very quickly spending less than a minute deciding on is this site worth staying on. You need to answer the following questions:

1. Who are you?

2. What is your main message or mission?

3. What is here for me?

4. Why should I choose this site over all the others that seem to be the same?

When it comes to Web pages you need to tell who you are, what you do, how you are different, and contact information first. Remember you have less than a minute to do all of this. Do not scare them away with splash pages and flash animations.
