The maximum review time for an employer to initially scan a resume is 30 Seconds or LESS. Even though you have many years of experience in the job, your resume is your SUPER BOWL AD to the corporate world. How it is organized, written and structured is critical in getting past that 30 second scan by the hiring manager.
After initial scan a secondary review cycle begins to sift down to the top 5-10 Candidates. Content, skill assessment and experience in the job are the areas that the HR Manager will use as the criteria to move you into the next interview pile.
Your resume needs to be like "BRAIN VELCRO", once picked up and read, it sticks in the mind of the reviewer. You want it to stand up and scream, "THIS IS WHO I AM AND WHAT I CAN DO FOR YOUR COMPANY!" The competition is fierce as millions of other job seekers are executing their marketing strategies. Your resume is your online representative to future hiring managers and if it blends in with the rest, it may never make it to the next level.
The typical job experience, objective and goals section will obviously contain your basic information about your current position, but what about content, style and format? Are you "Selling the Sizzle" or just re-writing the basic resume you have used over the years?
The current economic climate is the worst in decades and the unemployed are looking for anything and everything when it comes to finding a job. How does your resume stack up? Is it kind of like the "plain bagel" with no flavor and difficult to swallow?
Have you chosen a font with block type with basic lines and formats that look every other resume? Does the message and content flow? Have you updated the language of your sentences or statements to include today's buzzwords?
Re-invent yourself to highlight your strengths and add some colorful keywords to create a new fresh style with something that says you are experienced, but are willing to adapt. A resume that speaks to your level of maturity and professionalism but not present a hard to digest look and feel. Remember, your resume is your sales and marketing representative that tells a great deal about you through not only content, but presentation and format.
Instead of dusting off the old resume you used several years ago, consider employing a resume writing service. Having experience in a job is not always enough to get your resume noticed in today's world of the internet and search engines. You need a resume that stands out and speaks volumes about you, your qualifications and how you will be a valued asset to the hiring company.
