You may want to build your own shed to provide extra storage space on your property. However there are a few things you should consider first.

Check Building Codes

I build my own shed a few years ago. I did not use a set of plans or a materials list. I was not even certain exactly how it was going to look when I was finished. Well it turned out to be a bad decision to do it this way since it took a lot of time and cost a lot of extra money on wasted materials. And then once it was completed, I had to have it torn down because I never obtained the necessary permits or approval from my neighborhood association. So before you start any project, make sure you find out if there are any permits required and/or approvals from your neighborhood association.

If you do require a permit, then you have to submit a set of plans. In many cases the homeowners association will require a set of plans to be submitted as well. If you are knowledgeable, you may be able to create your own plans. However in my experience purchasing a good set of plans saves you a great deal of time, effort, and money.

A good set of plans will include a detailed list of materials so you know exactly what you need to purchase. It should also include a list of the cut sizes of lumber so you can possibly have it prepared piece by piece and complete it like a kit. It will makes things must easier and faster in the long run.

Location location location

Give some thought as to where to place your shed and how you plan to use it. Will it require power? And how do you want your shed to blend with your other structures? Ideally it will enhance the overall look of your property.

Giving a little consideration to these issues will makes the project go much smoother and save you a lot of time and money in the long run.
