You Are What You Think - What is Your Choice?

Expert Author Lynn Banis

Our thoughts are so very important in determining who we are. They say we are what we eat - well, I'd say we are what we think. Our thoughts arise from our beliefs, our observations and our perceptions. They, in turn, drive our behaviors. Our behaviors determine how we show up in the world and that is what people use to figure out who we are. It goes back to the Bible, The Book of Proverbs chapter 23 verse 7, that says, "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." Do we have any control over what we think? Of course we do but how do we monitor our thoughts and change them if we don't like them?

One way is to listen to our self talk. We all have a constant voice in our heads that comments on anything and everything we see, think and do. We can monitor that voice and change the words and tone it uses if we do not like what we are hearing. We can not turn it off. We can only decide to listen to it or change what it is saying. When we hear it being critical of other people we can counter that criticism with something positive. We may not be able to stop that little voice but we can decide whether or not to act on what it says. When we make a conscious decision to change our negative self talk to something positive we are thinking in positive terms.

When we decide to think in positive terms we become more positive as human beings. Just because we have some negative thoughts does not mean we are bad or negative people. It is what we do with the thoughts that counts. We can decide what to do with our thoughts. Since our thoughts drive actions that means we can decide what actions we are going to take. We always have a choice. To be at choice is to monitor and direct our thoughts and that becomes indicative of who we are at heart.

Being that aware is a skill and it leads to authentic or intentional living. Most thinking individuals do want to live intentional lives but sometimes they do not really know how to do that. Monitoring thoughts and making positive decisions about actions in one way to make sure you are living an authentic and intentional existence. It is up to you. What is your choice?
