Now that Outlook 2010 has been released, those of us who use both Outlook and Yahoo Mail have been anxious to set up a Yahoo Outlook 2010 connection. And it is easy to configure Outlook 2010 for Yahoo, if you know how to deal with a few details.
But from the email I've received, and the posts I've seen online, lots of folks have gotten snagged on one or more of those details. Here are a few of the mistakes that people tend to make when trying to make Outlook 2010 and Yahoo Mail work together:
1. Using an Incompatible Version of Yahoo Mail
Yahoo won't let you connect to your free Yahoo Mail account with Outlook (or any other mail program). I've heard various explanations for why this is so, but in the end it doesn't matter why.
To make a Yahoo Outlook 2010 connection, you must upgrade your regular Yahoo Mail account into a Mail Plus account or a Business Mail account. For most people, I recommend Yahoo Mail Plus.
This upgrade isn't a big hassle. You don't have to change your email address or do anything differently. You get some additional capabilities from the upgrade, foremost of which is the ability to connect with Outlook. But it does cost you a little bit of money ($19.95/year, or $1.66/month) in exchange for the big convenience of getting your Yahoo mail in Outlook.
2. Using an Unsupported Protocol
We need to lapse into geek speak here for a minute. People with some experience in this kind of thing try to set up a Yahoo IMAP connection, because the IMAP protocol is powerful and flexible.
But Yahoo doesn't support IMAP connections. Instead, they rely on POP3 connections. The POP3 protocol isn't as powerful or flexible as IMAP, but it works just fine for sending and receiving Yahoo mail using Outlook 2010.
3. Guessing at All the Settings
While anyone can set up this connection once they know how, the correct settings to use aren't intuitively obvious to most people. As a result, they get one or more of the fiddly little setting wrong, and the whole project falls down.
That's why working with instructions from someone who has already set this up many times can save you lots of headaches. Do you really want to spend hours trying different settings until you get it right?
Now you've seen the three major issues I've seen when people try to make a Yahoo Outlook 2010 connection. Getting it right is doable and pretty simple, when you have the right help.
