Figuring out what's wrong with your Xbox 360 is one of the first steps in getting up and running again. If you're console is giving you 3 red lights, the E74 error, or distorted graphics, try these quick and easy Xbox 360 troubleshooting tips to diagnose the problem.
1. I know this sounds simple, but make sure all of your Xbox 360 hookups are correctly hooked up. Make sure the AV cable is snugly connected to the console, the hard drive isn't visibly damaged, and that the power cable looks OK.
Also, check the controllers and make sure the batteries are working. Occasionally bad peripherals can cause your Xbox 360 to give you a three lights error.
2. Try a different power outlet. Sometimes insufficient power can cause you to start getting trouble codes on your Xbox 360. If you're using a power strip, bypass it and plug your console directly into the wall.
3. The leading cause behind Xbox 360 hardware issues stems from excess heat. Although you can't permanently fix this without opening the console up, you can take steps to help your console get better ventilation.
Is your Xbox 360 sitting directly on the carpet? If it is, then put it on a hard flat surface so the hot air can escape. That also means if your system is packed in a tight area, you should consider moving it out so it can get fresh cool air. Give your Xbox 360 thirty minutes or so to cool off and then try it again.
If None of These Work
If none of these troubleshooting tips work, or if they temporarily fix the Xbox 360, then chances are that the internal components have already been damaged or are at risk.
If that's the case then you'll have to take more extreme measures to have your Xbox 360 repaired.

What do I mean by "extreme measures"? You could send your Xbox 360 off to Microsoft, wait a month, and pay expensive repair fees or... You could learn Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death Fix that permanently repairs your console in the next hour without ever leaving the house. Skeptical? I don't blame you.
