Despite its reliability problems, the Xbox 360 is a very popular gaming console. Millions of owners love what it can do but hate its hardware problems. They especially hate the red ring of death. For some, using their warranty is not an attractive option. They've heard of others doing self repair but they don't feel up to the task themselves.
Typical questions they might have are:
1.) Do I have the skills?
Are you comfortable using basic tools like a screw driver, knife, and pliers? Can you follow clear step by step instructions? If so, then you have what it takes.
2.) Will I make the problem worse or cause further damage?
There's no absolute guarantee that something bad won't happen. The main thing is to do it slow and careful. If something isn't clear to you, then do nothing until you know precisely what to do. Great care must be taken not to damage or short out the motherboard. This is possible at certain steps during the repair especially when removing the xclamp from the motherboard. You will most likely use a flat head screw driver to lever and pop off the xclamps.
You can also cause damage if you start improvising. Specific types of washers are typically used as spacers. Use the exact washers specified by the instructions. Metal washers that are too big may cause an electrical short. If a nylon washer is specified, don't substitute a metal one in its place.
Static electricity can damage the motherboard. On very dry days, do your repair in an uncarpeted and humidified room.
Disconnect the console from the wall outlet. If you must work on the Xbox when it's plugged in, don't get too relaxed. Under certain conditions, getting shocked by 110 volts AC has been known to cause cardiac arrest. All it takes is for the current to find a pathway through the heart.
Be careful not to cut your hands on the heat sinks.
3.) What tools will I need?
Typically you'll need a flat head screw driver, a knife, pliers, a specific Torx screw driver or wrench, various machine screws and washers. You will also need Artic Silver thermal compound. These items can be found in most hardware stores.
4.) Where can I get reliable instructions?
Excellent guides can be purchased online. Make sure that there are video instructions as well as written instructions with plenty of diagrams and pictures. The videos provide the basic instruction while the written text is good for filling in details such as the exact parts and tools etc.
Making an exact, detailed guide that leaves nothing out, takes a lot of thought and effort. It's one thing to know how to repair an Xbox. It's another to create a good, reliable guide that's easily understood. Anyone posting free instructions on the Internet will not put the same effort into their guide as that placed in a professional guide. You also don't know if the free instructions are reliable.
