Writing Your Life Story

Have you ever considered writing a personal history? It might sound a bit daunting at first but it is actually very you can do with minimal effort. You do not have to be a professional writer to jot down facts, experiences and memories that have been so much a part of your life.

You may think also that you lead a very uninteresting life where nothing very exciting occurs. You happen to be living right now at an amazing time in history when things are changing so rapidly. The chances are that your future grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be astounded to read of all the things that you experienced during your lifetime.

When I read of my own grandparents' and how different their lives were from mine in so many ways it almost seems like it was another world. And yet, how very similar a lot of their life experiences were to the ones I am now having or have had. As I read of their families and their joys and struggles, I feel a deep connection and a sense of belonging.

If you are considering starting a personal history but do not know where to start, here are some ideas. You might begin with your earliest memories and write briefly (or in detail if you want) about some of them. That would comprise a section. The next section may be memories of your grade school years, or perhaps all of your school years. Segmenting your life into sections may not seem quite so overwhelming.

Write details about your everyday life, what you like to eat, what you like to do. Write about the people who have been important to you. Write about what makes you happy or sad or fearful. Write about those you love.

Commit to writing a little each day or a bit more each week and then stick to your commitment. If you do this you will end up with a wonderful accomplishment that will be valuable to those who love you in the years to come.
