Writing For Money - Take the Fear Out of Selling Your Writing Services
Print This Article Ezine Publisher Send To Friends Add To Favorites Post A Comment Suggest Topic Report Author

Want to write for money? If you do, one of your biggest challenges may be your own fear. You're scared of the unknown, and you're scared that you won't live up to your clients' expectations.

Let's look at three ways you can eliminate your fear of selling, so that you can enjoy the process, and can make money selling your writing services.

1. Understand that Selling Means Helping: Your Clients Need Your Help

Many years ago, one of my sons had just gained his driver's license. He was saving up for his own car, and had the use of my car in the meantime. We discussed responsible driving. He was in the middle of a typical teenage "I know that already" phase. I got tired of hearing it, and said so. He responded with: "You can't make me do anything I don't want to do!"

Obviously, I was doing a lousy job of selling him on the concept of responsible driving. I had to reframe my presentation very smartly to demonstrate that responsible driving helped him to do what he wanted to do.

The same thing applies to all selling. Selling means showing that you can help people to do what they want to do.

You can't sell your services to someone unless you can show that that you can help them to achieve their goals.

Therefore, the first step in selling is understanding that at a basic level, you're not selling anything -- you're only helping, and that your clients need your help.

2. Be Selective: Not Everyone on the Planet Is Your Client

When you start selling your services, you need to be selective. Not everyone who needs writing services is a good match for what you provide.

Once you realize this, you'll eliminate fear of rejection, because there's no rejection. In fact, you're eager to say good-bye to potential clients who aren't a good match for what you do, and the way you like to work.

3. Make Selling Easy: Educate First

Since you can't make people do what they don't want to do, education needs to be a major part of any sales process. If you train your prospective clients, those clients who are a good match for you will self-select -- they'll automatically want what you're selling.
